Disney announced what we already knew today – Star Wars Weekends will be returning to Hollywood Studios on the following dates in 2012:
- May 18-20
- May 25-27
- June 1-3
- June 8-10
A very big thank you to the Walt Disney Company for getting around to this announcement nice and early. Usually we don’t see an official announcement until late next month. I have a lengthy overview of last year’s event and what to expect in general here and pictures of the Star Wars Motorcade Parade here.
The event is a lot of fun, but there are two major deterrents. First, Hollywood Studios is much more crowded on any Star Wars Weekend date. You basically won’t see it more crowded outside of a very busy day over a holiday week like Easter or Christmas. Second, the “character situation” is similar to a Mickey’s Party. There’s too much demand and too few characters, causing lines to be incredibly long for most of the day. We’re talking about 60 minute waits for Darth Vader and Chewbacca. Since the event is scheduled in May and June, it’s also very hot out and most of the characters meet outside with no canopy or anything to shield the sun from the characters or the queue. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and I particularly enjoyed the various shows in the Premier Theater as well as seeing all of the various Star Wars characters out and about.
