Tomorrowland Indy Speedway

May 12, 2010 ~ 1 minute read2 Comments

Location:

Tomorrowland across from Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe.

Extra Magic Hours: Morning, Evening.

Type: Simulated car race.

Similar To: Unique.

Requirements: Must be 32” or taller to ride and 54” or taller to drive alone.

Scary Factor: Zero.

What to Expect: Tomorrowland Speedway is themed like a race track and features more than 200 gas powered cars.

Unlike a NASCAR race, the cars have a maximum speed of about seven miles per hour and there are guide rails that keep cars traveling in a straight line. The massive amount of exhaust leaving the cars makes the queue reek of gasoline and it is not shaded. The “race track” is about 2,000 feet long (4/10 of a mile) and takes about five minutes to complete.

FastPass+: Yes – moderate priority. Availability is usually good and using FP+ will bypass the uncomfortable queue and save 20 to 30 minutes in the afternoon.

What You Miss Using FastPass+:

Just the wait in the outdoor, mostly uncovered, stinky queue.

Total Average Experience Time with FastPass+: 20 minutes.

4th FastPass+ Availability:

Expect to Wait:

When To Go: Before 10am, in the last two hours of operation, or with FastPass+.

Length: 5 minutes.

Rating: 2/10 for adults; 9/10 for more kids.

Commentary: The queue for Tomorrowland Speedway is brutal. Uncovered and excruciatingly long, it’s one of the most unpleasant experiences at Disney World. The ride itself doesn’t offer most adults much in the way of fun or entertainment either. Youngsters tend to love it though, especially those tall enough to drive. Skip it without a young child that would like to drive for the first time.

This is the funniest ride to watch, take 5 minutes and just watch the huge smiles on each kid’s face while they crank the wheel from side to side hitting the partition and laughing while their passenger has white knuckles holding on with one hand and trying to avoid grabbing the wheel and ruining the driver’s fun!

I rode this last year, and couldn’t wait for it to be over. The cars move way too slow, and the steering is terrible. I tried to keep the rail centered between the wheels, but it is nearly impossible to do so.. If the steering was more reliable, it could make for a relaxing ride, but as it stands, I will be skipping this ride.
