Refreshment Outpost EPCOT Festival of the Holidays Review

December 18, 2021 ~ 3 minutes read5 Comments

We press on from Cheesy Wontons and Las Posadas.

The Refreshment Outpost gets into the spirit of the holidays with some number of Festival Offerings this year.

I don’t mourn a whole lot. There was the paralyzing disappointment of the 2021 Washington Football season. And the crushing disappointment of the inaugural Seattle Kraken hockey season. And the devastating disappointment of the Seattle Mariners baseball season. And the Seattle Sonics basketball season. Typhoon Lagoon is still closed, which limits the places where I can (legally) show off my body. Space Jam 2 probably could have been better. There’s my life. But I will forever miss the Warm Caramel Stuffed Salted Pretzel with Vanilla Soft-Serve that the Refreshment Post recently served. Like last year. You will be forever in my heart. I mean some of this is probably still in my body somewhere. At least until we meet again. When somebody finally takes you out of your shipping container, probably with little regard to modern sanitary techniques. It will be fine I’m sure.

Here’s what we’ve got this year:

We have a Coconut-Pineapple Cake with Dole Whip Pineapple that sounds an awful lot like the Pineapple Upside Down Cake that was once (2021) served at Aloha Isle at Magic Kingdom.

Where it looked like this. The trick to photography these days is to hold the food item up in front of something random that only diminishes the quality and focus of whatever failed creation we’re really supposed to be discussing.

Just put it anywhere. Then for no reason at all, you can take an eight second video clip of the inanimate object. Then give the rights to your moving picture to the Chinese when you upload it to what is definitely not a cesspool in TikTok.

Here’s the Outpost’s full menu back over at Epcot while we’re here.

The Outpost is usually a good stop for a free cup of ice water (ask for a large) as there’s rarely a line. It’s possible that I don’t know what constitutes a plurality anymore, but it looks like we have just the one SPECIAL FESTIVAL OFFERINGS [sic] (their caps) this year. The offerings can’t even really spill directly over to the other side with Bud Light headlining the boozy menu.

Coconut-Pineapple Cake with DOLE Whip – $5

This was one of my favorite desserts at the Festival. It’s a large portion, even if I haven’t accurately captured that size in the picture. I need to hunt down my banana for scale, but the rosemary that I planted in my herb garden thanks to the cranberry margarita from the Las Posadas kiosk back in Mexico has really taken off. It’s basically raining rosemary in my apartment right now. Most of my belongings are now covered in a couple inches of fragrant herb. At least that includes covering up my Morimoto Asia business card, so I won’t be able to find that place to eat. So it’s not all bad. Speaking of restaurants that you don’t want to eat at, I’m desperately trying to make as much rosemary cream sauce for Tony’s Town Square as possible. They’ll water it down with a couple of hoses out back to about 25% consistency before using it to top yesterday’s spaghetti. Sounds like March’s Chef’s Special to me. Yes, I know it’s December. Yes, you should be scared.

Back to the topic at hand, the Pineapple Cake is light and airy with the fork basically running through it like butter. Or I’ve really gotten that strong microwaving so many Hot Pockets at home. But I think the fluffiness of the cake is more likely to be the culprit. The Cake still packs a considerable, natural pineapple punch in every bite. Considering you could probably mail a tray of this stuff to Hawaii for a single 1-ounce stamp, it’s an impressive array. Your standard, refreshing, sweet, and maybe just a little artificial Pineapple Dole Whip is swirled on top. We thought the tropical vibe of the coconut shavings elevated the experience even more, adding a little crunch and a little bit of a nutty quality. The Cake is also $1.50 less than the smaller version from Magic Kingdom when it’s offered. It may return back there for $35 after the Festival concludes. I’d take advantage of this one while you can.

Taste: 10/10

Value: 10/10

Bavaria is up next and then we will try to sprint through Italy, hoping to break the sight and sound barriers, only to end up in…the America Pavilion.

I am missing the context for the Morimoto shade. Need a couple thousand words and matching pix please!

Ditto. I’d like to see how bad Morimoto Asia is in Josh’s eyes. I don’t recall seeing any reviews before on this site. Haven’t been there myself.

Josh, I am so glad ‘The Website’ is up and moving again and you are doing better. You are far and away the best author in the Disney space and your articles, pictures, and advice have done so much to enrich my family and me.

That said, both my wife and I independently noticed the level of snark in your reviews has been unusually high. Of course The Website always calls it like it sees it, and there are plenty of times (Italy booth, Tony’s restaurant, people judging time by the angle of the sun, $100 bill burners) snark is the deserved dominant component of the given review, but in general this new series has skewed negative and I just want to send well wishes and positive vibes that that negativity isn’t spilling over from you personally since again, in all sincerity, you’re amazing and deserve peace and happiness especially this time of year.

But now THAT said this series has also given us the Morimoto Asia series of barbs, which starting as somewhat random, moved to slightly tedious, but now has become my favorite joke on the site. So…(keep) feel(ing) well, have fun, but keep the Morimoto hate coming 🙂

You’re telling me that I’m being too negative on a review where I awarded the item a perfect score of 10 out of 10 on both taste and value? Something that would never happen with this rating system if I used it after a meal at Morimoto Asia?
