We continue from Goshiki in Japan.
You’ll see the Funnel Cakes stand just past the American Adventure Pavilion on the Japan side.
A couple of years ago, the Funnel Cakes Stand began offering a Festival-exclusive Funnel Cake. That tradition extends to this year’s Festival of the Arts.
Originally, the Funnel Cakes were gigantic, which made it a little difficult to fit the gargantuan serving into a Festival trip around World Showcase. There was so much of it that you’d be completely full after finishing it unless six or seven people were sharing. More recently, the size has become more manageable. That trend continues with the $9.50 “Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Funnel Cake – Peanut Butter Ice Cream, Marshmallow Cream, and Raspberry Glaze.”
This is a fun concept with the two circular Funnel Cakes serving as the “bread” surrounding a sizable square of creamy peanut butter ice cream and a dollop of marshmallow cream. The hot Funnel Cakes themselves are as fresh and crispy as ever with each fried up to order. The Raspberry Glaze isn’t as pronounced as I was expecting, but it adds a little bit of a fruity tang to each refreshing bite. There’s a little bit of marshmallow cream nestled in there too, adding some sugar and easing the overall crunchiness of the funnel cake.
I’m not sure if it’s the fact that this is the eighth or ninth of these that I’ve reviewed over the last couple of years, but I thought this one “felt” a little less novel or a little less unique than some of the previous iterations. It might have been the fact that packing in funnel cake on top of funnel cake took away from the other flavors. Usually, it’s just one of these funnel cakes serving as the base for the ice cream and the other toppings. Either way, you won’t find a fresher-made dessert at the Festival than one of these Funnel Cakes, and anyone who enjoys peanut butter will be into it.
