Walking Around the Pop Century Resort

by josh on July 11, 2012

In Part 1, we walked around the Pop Century’s main building, food court, and pool.  This time, we’ll take a look around the rest of the resort.

My reflection.  It would be impossible/expensive for Disney to walk everyone to their rooms after checking in to the resort, but I’ve always found the Value resorts to have particularly confusing layouts and poor signage.  It’s relatively easy to find your room once you know where it is, but that first walk can be a little rough.  That being said, I’m not known for having a sense of direction and I’m easily confused.  You can totally trust me though.

Getting a “Preferred” room is an extra $15/night or $105 over the course of a seven night trip.  You’ll find Preferred rooms in certain parts of the 50s, 60s, and 70s sections.  Personally, I’m not interested in paying the upcharge, but I don’t mind walking a little bit more.  I wish they had a version of the Preferred rooms called something like “away from the freakin’ kids and pools.”  That would be worth an extra $15.  Heck, an extra $1,500.42.  I think the furthest rooms away from the main building are around five to seven minutes away, so you’re not looking at the 15 or 20 minute walk you’d be looking at from the Ranchos section to the main building at the Coronado Springs Resort.

Like the other Value resorts, the main decorations are these oversize icons.  Yo-yos in this instance.

The vibe is decidedly motel-y.  The Value resorts are nice on a budget or for those that aren’t necessarily going to spend a lot of time in the room.  There isn’t much of a point in dropping $400/night at the Polynesian if you’re going to spend most of your time at Epcot.  But you’re also talking to someone that would probably stay off-site with a family if I was planning to drive to the Parks.  For less than you’re paying at the Pop this summer, you can easily rent a three bedroom townhouse with two bathrooms and a kitchen in Kissimmee.

More big stuff.

I should probably get my head out of the gutter, but those speaker things always look like cigarette packs.

The resort has two “quiet pools”  This one in the 50s Section and the Computer Pool in the 90s section.  There isn’t a whole lot that’s “quiet” about them, but you can see that there are far fewer people here than the Hippy Dippy.  As I recall, they turn the country music on right at 8am.

Another opportunity to give your clothing away at the on-site laundry machines.  Every once in a while someone will ask how I “support this website.”  Remember I said I sold clothing on eBay, right?

A jukebox.

Only the hippest tracks.

Another shot. Try to dodge Dad’s fists.

Tramp and The Lady:

It’s always “interesting” to see what Disney decides to do with its movie choices.  I’m not sure what they were thinking with the Mighty Ducks section at All-Star Movies.  I’m not saying it isn’t a “classic,” but it certainly isn’t as timeless as many of Disney’s other properties.

Maybe Bobbum Man lives here.

Really, nothing is small at the Pop.  Other than the rooms!  ZING!

Out closer to the pool sits Play-Doh.

Totes cute.

More timeless?  Or is it just that I enjoyed watching it growing up?

Years represented.  Good thing they didn’t try to do “the future” again.  Or go to Mars.

Like every other Disney resort, movies are offered on-site. I guess they aren’t showing American Psycho daily anymore. More kids in the summer probably.

Take me to the Groooooooooove Town.

Via this truck with cowboy hat.

As far as I know, this water play area hasn’t worked in years. Goofy’s always getting cheated.

I’ve never actually seen anyone playing.  All the better, I would guess.

Big Wheel.

Is it wrong that I instantly thought, “I wonder if that would be a good scotch drinking location?” You’d probably need to be air-lifted.  Or a couple of you could sort of toss me up there.

Large Foosball.

Large Mickey.

Getting closer to the 90s – a time that I understand.

Somebody could probably stand this up straight.  I’m not sure how they can in good conscience operate Pop Century with this sideways.  Add in that broken down condiment dispenser and I’m putting up a one star review on Trip Adviser.

Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head near the back of the resort.

Moving into the 80s and 90s.

Pac Man.

Electronics equipment built with proprietary formats will never work, Sony!

The Computer Pool here around the 90s section.

I watched Roger Rabbit when I was much younger in the movie theater and I remember it scared the heck out of me.  I was a nervous child.

Another look at the pool.  Not dead yet.

A potentially more pleasant look at the Pop’s landscaping.

The facts:

Allegedly.

Mom, what’s a nuclear accident?

Erupting to announce that I will be born in exactly five years.  Get ready ‘merica.

I’ll have to return to capture the facts I missed.  For knowledge.  For America.

Hi J., The clarity of your pictures is amazing…Thanks for a great site….

Jazzimine July 11, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Now I want to stay there just because of the Roger Rabbit statue! I LOVE that movie!

Tim July 11, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Didn’t the the first Toy Story come out in 1995 not 1996?

Jennifer S July 11, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Tim, according to IMDB you are correct.

aobrien July 11, 2012 at 7:10 pm

@ TIM – that’s what I thought.

I was also born in 1985. It was a good year :)

Brian July 11, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Josh, in easy 2.0 would i be able to find these under a pop century heading instead of uncatagorized? I can never seem to find these once they’re off the front page. Some navigation like resorts– value–pop.

Tracey July 11, 2012 at 7:30 pm

I think I might like to stay at POP one day. Thanks for the great pictures.
Some of the rooms in the 50′s, 80′s and 90′s do seem kind of far from the buses or food court though. I’m pretty sure I would prefer a preferred room.

RebeccaMcK July 11, 2012 at 7:45 pm

That Goofy statue in one picture is I think the same statue in the lobby of the Paradise Pier hotel in Anaheim (one of DLR’s hotels, where I’m going to stay in October). I agree with the people asking (in this thread and the older one) that it would be great if you could have clickable links in the right margin on the home page so that articles/walk-throughs of the various hotels could be found easily. You’ve probably been to all or almost all of them.

josh July 11, 2012 at 7:46 pm

The grand idea is to put these sort of pictures in with the reviews. So for Pop, you’d pull up the review and these pictures would be placed where appropriate. The pool in the pool section, the food/menu in the food/menu section etc.

RebeccaMcK July 11, 2012 at 7:47 pm

^ Maybe put the hotel articles (posts with photos) under “Resort Reviews” – haven’t looked there yet to see what’s already there.

RebeccaMcK July 11, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Aha, you thought of the same thing. :)

twopearls July 11, 2012 at 8:23 pm

What…no pic of the trivia for 1966?!?!? I feel so ignored. And old.

Terri in So Cal July 11, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Last year we finally went and found the 1999 so I could take a picture of my daughter by her birth year sign. She was completely bummed that the only thing they could say about 1999 was about Y2K. I had to explain to her what Y2K was. Lol!

shine87 July 11, 2012 at 8:48 pm

My daughter loved the Mr and Mrs Potato Head when we went in 2009 she made us take a picture by it just about every day. In fact I’m pretty sure all she cared about that trip was Ariel and that Mr and Mrs Potato Head statue

Desh July 11, 2012 at 9:57 pm

I am still in my post-Disney depression and this installment made me so sad! We love Pop!

ron July 11, 2012 at 10:01 pm

The birds obviously don’t think much of America’s bicentennial. Or maybe it’s Barbara Walters they are giving their opinion of.
I wonder if that sign would be allowed to remain in that condition at a moderate or deluxe resort.

Penny July 12, 2012 at 4:54 am

Long stalker, 1st time poster: We are staying at Pop for the 1st time next month and I was going to request the “cigarette” bldg. I heard that’s where all the good parties are.. :/

Keep up the excellent work Josh!

Penny July 12, 2012 at 4:56 am

Im editing to say long TIME stalker. Being freakishly short, theres nothing long about me.

thank you.

James N July 12, 2012 at 5:00 am

On first glance I thought the guy on the Grooooooooove Town 8 track was wearing an ear bud with the cord hanging down. Then I realized three things. 1) Ear bud headphones weren’t around yet. 2) It’s hard to groove with ear bug headphones in. 3) It’s a light pole…how disappointing.

Kevin July 12, 2012 at 5:24 am

NAFTA was signed 20 years ago?!? Wow, I feel old.

Meghan July 12, 2012 at 5:49 am

I agree with you. The jungle book is more timeless. It is considered a classic after all. And Twister should never be played that close to concrete.

I’d have to say, I like AofA more than the concept for the other half of the century.

tanya July 12, 2012 at 6:32 am

1974 is blatantly missing. I guess they’re still working on it as my life must be hard to write into one sentence. ;)

pfalcioni July 12, 2012 at 7:25 am

“I should probably get my head out of the gutter, but those speaker things always look like cigarette packs.”

They’re transistor radios. To your credit, I remember they used to market them in ads stating “As small as a cigarette pack, fits in your breast pocket!”

Psac July 12, 2012 at 7:32 am

I think maybe he was more concerned about Twister being played in public. By kids.

Bunny July 12, 2012 at 7:35 am

“Allegedly”…ha – I caught that and almost spit my water out!

Haven’t stayed here. The only Value I’ve stayed at is Movies, and yeah, the Mighty Ducks thing confuses me, too…

patriot14 July 12, 2012 at 7:41 am

I thought I got pics of everything at POP, but never saw the Mr/Mrs Potato Head or the lonely Goofy and car. Didn’t make all the way “to the back” I guess.

P.S. Some of the songs listed on the jukebox sleeves are very odd…..Don’t Google them….

Cindy Kay July 12, 2012 at 8:12 am

Love the “ZING!”

Grace July 12, 2012 at 8:49 am

“Every once in a while someone will ask how I “support this website.” Remember I said I sold clothing on eBay, right?”

ROFL – I was one of those that asked….. what a racket! Why didn’t I think of it first…..???

Andrea July 12, 2012 at 8:58 am

I thought they removed the car and Goofy????? They were being removed in October 2011, and I do not recall seeing them at all in Feb of this year.

jcarwash July 12, 2012 at 9:14 am

The Goofy with Corvette is now just a photo opp area. The actual water jets that made it Goofy Pop Jet Playground were removed within the last year.

With all the detail in the Pixar areas across the way at AoA that 1996 Toy Story sign is unfortunate. It’s probably been there the whole time now. Now that it has been documented here perhaps we can get it fixed.

I also enjoyed the ZING line. Well done.

Barberella July 12, 2012 at 9:26 am

If there are no young children in your group, may I suggest that you request “Building 9, facing the parking lot” at Pop. There are NO “preferred” rooms in Building 9 – so you will get a room at a standard rate.

If you check the map – or in person – there is a bit of green space between Building 9 and the parking lot so noise from cars entering or leaving the parking lot are negligible. There will be no noise from the quiet pool (which is on the other side of Building 9) – yet the pool is readily accessible if you want to swim.

It’s a very nice location for adults or older children. I don’t recommend it for those with young children due to safety reasons (depending on the exact location of the room, there may be a tendency to cut across the parking lot for a bit).

Erika July 12, 2012 at 11:52 am

Grat post thanks,
For your business ventue..You prob can get top dollar for complete family sets of matchy mickey tie-die!
My 1971 year ( and yes I feel old :) is the best b/c WDW opened and I was there! Five months old and in the hotel room with a sitter alot I am told , but i was there!….and back many times including the opening of Epcot in 81…all before you were born!

Erika July 12, 2012 at 11:52 am

Ugh…i pad keyboard bugs me…sorry for typos…

Valerie July 12, 2012 at 12:33 pm

“I wish they had a version of the Preferred rooms called something like “away from the freakin’ kids and pools.” That would be worth an extra $15. Heck, an extra $1,500.42.”

As always, cracking me up! And I’m not that far into your post!

Valerie July 12, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I would like to sign up for the ‘Big Wheel” tossing! LOLOLOL

Robin July 12, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I thought they WERE cigarette packages. Lung cancer was big in the ’50′s, right?

Mary Clayton July 12, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Totally, Robin…according to Mad Men, people smoked in their sleep.

Sandra July 12, 2012 at 1:31 pm

Couldn’t agree more on your comment

“I wish they had a version of the Preferred rooms called something like “away from the freakin’ kids and pools.” That would be worth an extra $15. Heck, an extra $1,500.42.”

Would be nice if Pop made a small adults only section of rooms with King beds.

As always your insights are great!

Tom July 12, 2012 at 2:17 pm

@Sandra – What about large adults?

RebeccaMcK July 12, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Large adults…LOL
And the ear pods on guy actually being a light post, LOL….I’m glad I come back to read comments later, lots of fun. :-D

Jessica July 12, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Ha Terri in So Cal I think I must have been reading your TR.

And I will never understand the Mighty Ducks building…

Claire July 13, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Those toons that got dipped in turpentine…think that would scare any kid. Such an awesome movie.

alex July 13, 2012 at 3:03 pm

NICE!! A ” league ” reference!!! I am not the only one watching the show!!

Jill Marie July 13, 2012 at 7:51 pm

We always request a room on the 4th floor that DOESN’T face the pool. It tends to be much quieter. The first time we stayed here, we even got a king bed. It was lovely.

Disaholic July 14, 2012 at 9:04 pm

We stayed at Pop last November. The resort was cool but the rooms are small but I guess the values are all that way. It was still a very nice resort/room. The rooms were clean and nice decor, just small imo for a family of four. This year we are trying POR
