Update to Hollywood Studios Rope Drop and Other News

by josh on January 13, 2012

Studios’ Rope Drop (Or Lack Thereof)

As a follow up to a post a couple of days ago about the new rope drop procedure at Hollywood Studios, Disney will continue to follow the same procedure for at least the next week.  It’s “official” through at least January 20th.

The turnstiles will begin operating at 8:30am.  Toy Story Midway Mania, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Tower of Terror begin operating at 8:30am.  Jedi Training Academy sign ups also begin at 8:30am at Sounds Dangerous (which is officially called the ABC Sound Studio).  FASTPASSes will be available beginning at 8:30am for Toy Story, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, and Star Tours.  The first FASTPASSes I’ve seen distributed have a return time of 9:15am – 10:15am.

All other attractions begin operating at 8:45am.  If you head to Star Tours first thing (not recommended) and arrive before 8:45am, you’ll be held in the external queue until 8:45am when the attraction begins operating.

Mor Thiam On His Way Out

Mor Thiam, the Senegalese drummer who performs in the Africa section of the Animal Kingdom, will have his final performance on January 28, 2012.  His exit was preceded by “The Tropicals” Steel Drum Band, who performed for the last time on November 19th.  No word as to what, if anything, will replace either act.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight?  CAN YOU?????????  WHAT ABOUT NOW!!!!!!

A new insert is coming to the popular “The Magic, The Memories, And You” projection show at Magic Kingdom beginning February 3rd.  Titled, “Romance,” it should feature many of our favorite romantic moments from our favorite Disney movies.  I’m expecting it to run for about a week after Valentine’s Day, but you never know with these things.

Shortened Celebrate A Dream Come True Parade Route From January 20 – February 10

Celebrate A Dream Come True, the Magic Kingdom’s usual 3pm Parade, will have an alternate route beginning one week from today.  Disney will be working on the concrete in Frontierland, which has necessitated the Main Street Electrical Parade to “go dark” during these same dates.  The Celebrate A Dream Come True Parade normally begins on Main Street in between the Emporium and City Hall, continues up through Liberty Square and Frontierland, and exits to the left of Splash Mountain.  Because the floats won’t be able to fit through Frontierland, the Parade route will start in the same location, continue around The Hub in front of Cinderella Castle, and then continue back the same way it came, ultimately exiting in the same location as it began.

Vision House Opening April 2012

“Vision House,” which replaces the “House of Innoventions” in Innoventions East, is expected to open in April 2012.

The VISION House is really about showcasing the solutions that will change how people keep their homes secure, comfortable and green through technology and innovation.”

In other words, it should be relevant for about 45 minutes.

Hi Josh – the new non-rope drop opening at DHS sounds so much better. Is there a reason this won’t continue beyond 1/20? I’m arriving on 1/29.

    josh January 13, 2012 at 11:48 am

It may very well (and likely will) continue past the 20th. But as far as staffing and the “official plan” is concerned, it’s only currently scheduled through the 20th.

    Adam January 13, 2012 at 12:02 pm

So it’s now the official hours?
    No longer a “secret”?

    RebeccaMcK January 13, 2012 at 12:34 pm

“WHAT ABOUT NOW?” That’s funny right there. I had a feeling that “no rope drop” thing was just temporary at DHS – I hope it comes back though, whether it’s just off and on or permanent.

Josh, thanks for the post and info.

I’m confused by something from the wdwmagic link that states :
“2012 Passholder benefits expire on May 31 2012 – they had previously been active for a year. Updated benefits will be available for all valid Passholders on April 1, 2012″

    Can you clarify for me?

Disney continues to wow me with thier intelligence in their AP offers and emails:

Save 10% on regularly priced food and non-alcoholic beverages Monday through Friday during lunch hours** at participating Epcot Table-Service locations listed below.

Discount not available on the following dates: New Year’s Day, January 1, 2012; Easter, April 8, 2012; and Mother’s Day, May 13, 2012. ** Lunch hours vary by location. Inquire at time of booking.

When was Easter or Mother Day NOT on a sunday? I’ll give them half credit on New Years (which also was a sunday this year).

Maybe someone should sneak over to AK & snatch one of those AP holder calendars.

Josh- we will be there during the new parade route. Do you have any recommendations on where to sit? Would the hub be best so that you could watch it pass once and then head off to attractions? Or do you think we will be bombarded by all of the people exiting Main St after it passes once? Will CMs make them stay in their spots until the parade circles back? Seems like such an odd scenario. I can’t remember exactly how many floats are in this parade, but it seems like it will almost be doubling up on itself.

I am starting to feel like a stalker but I have tried emailing you a couple of times at your contact address listed here but no response. I am trying to get an appreciation gift to you. Does your email work?

Hey Josh: So what does this 8:30 opening do to early EMH? On-site people now only have 30 min of extra time or do off-site guests have to wait until official opening at 9:00?

This is a sad thing. The “running of the bulls” was one of the greatest experiences at Disneyworld.

Not sure why they don’t just do that same procedure at 9am instead of 8:30am. I got nabbed with something like that at Universal Orlando, everything says park opens at 9am, ok sure there’s “extra hours” for those who stay at their resort or something, but I get their at 8:45am and people are already being admitted to the park, Harry Potter rides already have 45 minute waits by the time I get over there.
