Timing My Hollywood Studios Ideal Touring Plan Part 2

by josh on July 2, 2012

I’m seeing some goofy behavior with my Firefox installation not displaying some of the pictures.  If it seems like you’re missing half of the photos, please post a comment and I’ll see if I can get to the bottom of whatever is causing it.  Clearing the cache would fix the problem and is probably a smart thing to do regardless.

Continuing from Part 1.

Jake from Jake and the Never Land Pirates continues to see short wait times in Animation Courtyard.

Samesies with Handy Manny.  Not more than a dozen people in line.

Brave merchandise continues to permeate, this time outside of the entrance to Voyage of the Little Mermaid.  A few Disney Store items:

“Brave” added another 35.5 million over the weekend to bring its domestic gross up to 132.2 million dollars.  Or as Disney calls it, “About 12 John Carters.”  Walt Disney Company stock closed at all time high of $48.50 on Friday, hitting $48.95 earlier in the day.  Despite a somewhat tumultuous few weeks on Wall Street, Disney stock has held strong.

Wait times at 11:24am.

“Mom, instead of riding Toy Story Midway Mania, can we hula hoop while some teenagers blow bubbles in our faces?”

I’ve been messing around with Adobe Lightroom, which “provides a comprehensive set of digital photography tools, from powerfully simple one-click adjustments to cutting-edge advanced controls. Create images that inspire, inform, and delight:”

Any of those “effects” are from pressing one button.

This is my favorite though.

Dumbo “styled” to look like it’s from the movie “300.”  22 megapixels: http://i.minus.com/ibjZJB18gp9TgP.jpg.

Back to business.  It’s 11:27am and FASTPASS return is at 12:20pm – 1:20pm.

A few queue pictures for no reason in particular:

THEY’RE OUT OF SCOTCH IN THE LIBRARY!!!! THIS ISN’T DECLINING BY DEGREES!  IT’S A RACE TO THE !@#$ING BOTTOM!!!!!!!!

They weren’t out of scotch when I arrived.

ISO 12,800 using my 50mm F1.8 lens at F1.8.

Don’t Worry. Everything’s going to be fine.

Just fine.

I’m confident in saying this is a new shirt that I really like!

And in men’s.

Less sure on this one.

Back out front at 11:47am, for a total wait/ride time of around 20 minutes, which is the amount of time you’ll want to budget with FASTPASS.  I walked right into the preshow room.  FASTPASS is at 12:40pm – 1:40pm.

I think this is over exaggerated as well with FASTPASS up to 2:55pm – 3:55pm.

So you may be thinking, “This is a recommended day?”  The answer is yes, it’s the reality of summer.  Regardless of the day you visit, you’re going to see those triple digit waits at Toy Story and probably at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.  Considering crowd levels and how long the actual lines were, it seems like wait times at both are over exaggerated.  It’s 11:50am and you could walk right up and order at Fairfax Fare, something that wouldn’t be possible at this time of day when Hollywood Studios isn’t recommended.

Same with Rosie’s All American Cafe.  The shorter lines at the outdoor vendors also have something to do with the fact that they’re outdoor vendors in the summer heat.  For air-conditioned quick service, your choices are ABC Commissary, Toy Story Pizza Planet, and Backlot Express.  ABC Commissary typically has the most available tables indoors.  Pizza Planet fills up faster and the outdoor tables aren’t particularly pleasant because they’re smack dab in the sun.  Check upstairs where there may be availability.  Most of Backlot Express’s outdoor seating is covered and a bit cooler, but indoor seating may be taken during peak meal times in the summer.  Sci-Fi Dine-In, Mama Melrose’s Restaurante Italiano, and 50′s Prime Time Cafe aren’t particularly expensive if you’re looking for guaranteed air-conditioning at a table service restaurant.  You can get out of any of those three fairly easily for less than $20/entree and Mama Melrose and Sci-Fi have several entrees at $14 or less.  Add in the Tables in Wonderland discount and you’re not paying much more than you would for a burger and fries at a quick service.

Thank the ABC series “Once Upon A Time” for the resurgence of some of this villains merchandise over at Villains in Vogue on Sunset Boulevard.

This glass rose bottle topper almost makes it worth not finishing the bottle of wine.  Almost.

Sup Queen.

This is a tea holder or some such?  Something to do with tea?

Tea pot.

Accompanying mugs.

Finally, a coffee mug:

Or another morning beverage of your choice.  Not that I would recommend one…

The lineup at Sunset Treats:

Bigger: http://www.easywdw.com/reports4/bigger.jpg.

Writer’s Stop is another good choice.

A look down Sunset Boulevard at 12:01pm.

If you want to discuss “unsung favorites” at the theme parks, I don’t think you have to look much further than Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner.  Unlike something like Kona Cafe, which “literally” everyone praises, I don’t think you’ll ever see coverage of Min & Bill’s and few people know that it exists or what it serves.

Remember that you can order any of the entrees without the bagged chips for $2.00 less.  I recommend doing so and putting that money to work elsewhere, since the bag is smaller than what you’d get at the $2.69 pricepoint.

The entrees:

Pretzel Roll.

Chicken Caesar Sandwich and bonus “milkshake.”

Italian Sausage with Peppers and Onions and a Half/Half Vanilla/Chocolate Shake.

All very good and not available elsewhere.  At $5.59 without the chips, the Pretzel Roll in particular is a compelling value.  It’s only about a $1 more than your standard soft pretzel and has a lot more heft with the dog inside.  It’s located right across the way from American Idol Experience.  Keep it in mind if something sounds good.  My only complaints are that the “milkshakes” are more like soft serve ice cream and there isn’t a lot of chicken in the Chicken Caesar Sandwich.  On the plus side, all three items are easily portable, especially the cold Chicken Caesar Sandwich.  A nice choice to bring with you to Fantasmic.

But I’m interested in air-conditioning and checking another salad off the list.

Always plenty of outdoor seating.  As you’re looking at Star Tours, Backlot Express is located directly to the left.

Main menu.  Bigger: http://www.easywdw.com/reports4/backlotmenu.jpg.

This is another location where you get “unlimited refills” with your fountain beverage purchase.  The machines are freely accessible for anyone to use.

A few boring options in the Kids and Desserts categories.

Stealing a picture of someone’s dessert.

A quick look around:

The view from my table.

At least we don’t have to go far to wash our hands.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that the more elaborately themed, air-conditioned quick services also offer the most generic menus and fountain beverages with the machines publicly accessible?  Backlot Express is very nicely themed, but the menu certainly isn’t imaginative.  Electric Umbrella at Epcot isn’t necessarily themed well, but it also offers vast air-conditioned seating, unlimited beverage refills, and a boring menu.  The same is true at Restaurantosaurus at Animal Kingdom – self-serve beverages, air-conditioning, great theming, boring menu.

I oped for the Southwest Salad – Mixed Greens, Crisp Corn Tortilla, Black Bean Relish, Avocado, and Cilantro Vinaigrette – $8.29.

I don’t know if I had bad luck or what, but this was the worst salad I’ve ever had at Walt Disney World.  There’s virtually no chicken in it.  Maybe three bites.  The salad dressing was either tasteless or nonexistent.  I ended up dumping two ranch dressing containers on it, which probably means the Cheeseburger would have been healthier.  The lettuce wasn’t particularly crisp and the small bits of avocado only added to the mushy texture.  I think this is supposed to be similar to the Fairfax Salad or Dig Site Salad, but it just wasn’t working.  If you’ve had a better experience, please post!  Hopefully it was just a salad creating noob behind the wheel or something.  At present, not recommended at all.

We’ll return for another look at Backlot Express sometime when it isn’t so crowded. It’s really neatly themed.

It’s 12:33pm.  I’ve managed to ride all of the major attractions that now have long waits – Toy Story Mania twice, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours, and eaten lunch.  I could hop back on Star Tours now with an actual wait of less than ten minutes.  I got bogged down a bit after Toy Story because I didn’t arrive early enough.  I really wanted to be at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster by 9:20am or so, which would allow me to virtually walk on and then head to Tower of Terror for a walk-on there.  The slightly later return time for Toy Story also meant I couldn’t collect FASTPASSes for Tower of Terror or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster when it was convenient.  But all things told, this wasn’t a bad morning.  It probably would have been smarter to wait at Tower of Terror in the morning and then collect FASTPASSes for it or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster afterwards.  While I didn’t have to wait at Tower of Terror at all with my FASTPASS, it was a lot of walking to and from it.

Now, you’d probably want to catch a show or two and then take a sizable afternoon break until around 6pm.  Return in the evening and hit Backlot Tour, Great Movie Ride, Muppet Vision 3D, Animation Academy, or whatever else you have on your itinerary.  The 10:30pm Fantasmic is preferable if you can swing it because it’s so much less crowded and you’ll get good seats arriving at 10pm.  Don’t forget Characterpalooza that runs from 4:50pm to 6:30pm in the Animation Building.  More Characterpalooza info here.

We’ll take one last circle around to see what wait times look like after lunch.  You could walk right into Muppet Vision 3D, which is why we had no interest in doing it earlier.

Long lines for Phineas and Ferb, which is why they’re second on the Studios’ Character Prioritization list.

Five or so minutes for the Cars characters next door.

I enjoy the Osborne Lights as much as the next bro, but you’re going to have trouble convincing me that the Streets of America/Backlot Tour/Lights, Motors, Action! stage is the best use of space out here at a theme park that is woefully short on attractions, especially ones aimed at the younger set.

Getting back to why this is a recommended day, you could walk right on to the next Backlot Tour preshow/tram.

On a non-recommended day, you can look forward to being a member of this extended queue.

Considering there’s no one in the extended queue out here, the actual wait is closer to half of the posted 100 minutes here at 12:45pm.

With FASTPASS out to 7:35pm.

Over at Tower of Terror, the posted wait is up to 50 minutes at 12:53pm with FASTPASS out to 1:45pm – 1:55pm.

At Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, FASTPASS is three full hours further into the future than Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and the posted wait is still 100 minutes, though that seems about twice as long as the actual wait would be.

The reason for the exaggerated wait times is probably to push people to other less popular/high capacity attractions and keep actual wait times lower.  Remember one of Disney’s biggest goals is to have you somewhere other than in line.  Obviously, it’s impossible for you to buy a Mickey Bar or t-shirt in the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster queue, though it isn’t unheard of to see a cast member slinging beers and sodas.  By putting up the 100 minute wait, Disney is pushing people to collect FASTPASSes and head to another attraction, passing by multiple stores/kiosks/etc. on the way.

I guess the length of this one got away from me a little bit.  And the day is only half over!  On to a scrim-less Magic Kingdom!

Jack Over at allears just did a nice write up of backlot…

On Brave story gift set: “Turn Merida’s mom into a bear!”

Ummm…SPOILER ALERT!!

stevenmilz July 2, 2012 at 1:33 pm

That’s pretty good if TSMM FPs are still available at 12:45pm on a summer day…

cupcake July 2, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Nothing is worse than DHS on a super hot day. It’s like being stuck at an outdoor shopping mall on Black Friday, but in hell. I feel 20 degrees hotter at DHS than I ever do at any other park. Just looking at our sunset blvd shot makes me sweat.

Those PS filters are pretty cool. The third ToT shot down looks like a postcard!

That villain merchandise is kind of lame. Am I missing something? Is it seriously just a rose motif without any actual nods to characters? They expect me to buy a photo frame with my ultimate favorite, Maleficent, on the BACKING and replace her photo with mine? NEVER.

Ondina July 2, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Thanks for the quick review of Min and Bill’s. That pretzel dog looks likes a great snack!

vinotinto July 2, 2012 at 4:32 pm

@Ben – No kidding about the spoiler alert on the toy. The surprise element is (was?) the only thing going for it. And it’s not like the movie has been out for that long.

Love the walk throughs. We have lunch ADRs for 11 am. It gives me hope that we will be able to do some fun things before eating.

RebeccaMcK July 2, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Those toys were out for sale in stores like Target and Walmart before the movie ever came out.

Chanon July 2, 2012 at 5:14 pm

The
7th photo of the Tower of Terror was going to be my new wallpaper until Sparta showed up….

Bryan July 2, 2012 at 5:29 pm

The Tower of Terror wait sign looks different to me. It stood out in the picture yet I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it like that in the park

Meghan July 2, 2012 at 5:32 pm

SPARTA!!!

ginette July 2, 2012 at 6:06 pm

Is there anywhere to get Cars merchandise? Like the old Cars from the first movie? Does McQueen have a store anywhere?thanks.

Jenn July 2, 2012 at 6:18 pm

I want to see more TofT merchandise!!!!

Milan July 2, 2012 at 6:37 pm

For as much care Disney took to not spoil any of Brave during the trailers it seems odd how quickly they started spoiling it after it came out. Our family went to see it for a Monday matinee during opening week and had the surprise spoiled by a behind the scenes commercial on the Disney Channel right before we left. Oh well, movie was good anyway.

We will be trying the dockside diner next year for sure. Thanks!

RebeccaMcK July 2, 2012 at 6:46 pm

@ginette
Lots of Cars stuff can be found online, Disney Store and Amazon. And at toy stores…I’ve seen some at Walmart and Target that aren’t just “Cars 2″ items.

josh July 2, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Brian – Thanks, sounds like he enjoyed the salad. Would have liked to have seen a picture of what his looked like. I’ve never had a Disney salad with “chicken in every bite.”

cupcake – You can’t please everyone. You have just as many people clamoring for merchandise that isn’t “Disney in your face” as you have people that want “Disney in your face.” Rest assured there are plenty of other choices.

ginette – I guess with the amount of Cars stuff available, I haven’t paid much attention to whether or not it’s directed at the first or second movie. This picture was taken at the kiosk outside Lights, Motors, Action last Friday and it looks like there’s some “Just Cars” stuff available: http://i.minus.com/i8UXxtkelndUO.jpg

sherry July 2, 2012 at 8:09 pm

When I first saw the pic of the salad, I thought, “why did he ask them to hold all the goodies off the salad?” Then I read on…

Love the ToT pics

Miami July 2, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Stuffing the mom into the bear rates high on my creepy factor.

James N July 3, 2012 at 5:09 am

Since you are now all up in Adobe Lightroom does this mean we have seen the last of our friend HDR?

Kristy July 3, 2012 at 5:45 am

Can you post a recent post of muppets merchandise in the parks?

Kristy July 3, 2012 at 5:49 am

Sorry Josh, I saw your response in the last post.

ginette July 3, 2012 at 6:11 am

@Rebecca thank you for your reply. My Target and Walmart doesn’t sell ANY Cars “1″ stuff. I wish they did it would be cheaper than Disney. I did check online over Christmas and found nothing. Maybe I was looking wrong. I did find some on Ebay but lost on bids and wasn’t going to pay what they wanted for 1 individual car. My son wasn’t born when the first movie came out and it is so hard to find…well for me anyway.
And Josh thank you so much for that picture it helped A LOT! That Mack hauler is exactly (sort of) what I was looking for. It has Flo and Lugi, Guido and all the first Cars. We have only managed to get Sally, Sheriff and Ramone. That picture was awesome, I could really zoom in…wow!!! If you happen to get a chance can you check the price of that thing? Its going to bankrupt me! Thanks again.

Mick July 3, 2012 at 7:42 am

I was in DHS in early June and grabbed the Italian Sausage from Min & Bill’s. I attempted to “Joshify” my combo and skip the chips (and save the money). My bill still came up to 8.59 + tax, the guy just didn’t give me the chips. When I asked, he said there was no discount but offered me a cookie as a substitute. I guess being a world famous blogger does have its perks.

Kelli July 3, 2012 at 7:44 am

Oh yum. That pretzel roll looks fabulous!!!

RebeccaMcK July 3, 2012 at 8:10 am

@ginette
Toys R Us has some Cars stuff too, but I don’t remember now if it’s mostly “Cars 2″ or the original movie….my kiddo has a little Matchbox/HotWheels style car toy of each of the Cars characters (and only a couple from the second movie), but we got them over time from the stores (even the grocery stores had them in the one small toys aisle…King Soopers, which is Kroger elsewhere). With Cars Land having opened at DCA now, you’d think the merch would be back in stores. In the meantime, Disney Store online has all of this (quite a bit): http://www.disneystore.com/cars/mn/1000012/?catalogFromSearch=10002

RebeccaMcK July 3, 2012 at 8:20 am

@ginette
P.S. Take a look at that Disney Store link I provided, because I just looked at more of the Cars toys (amongst the 60 available) and a lot of them have been marked down in price a LOT. Sets of cars that were almost $30 are now $10. Sometimes if you order enough you might get a free shipping code, too (unless that’s just offered now and then – I get their emails all the time).

ginette July 3, 2012 at 9:47 am

@Rebecca…Thank you so much. you are so helpful. I look for the original Cars in every store and every yard sale I come across and nothing. My son has been obsessed for a good 6 months now and I always look. I will take a look at the link you provided. But thank you I really appreciate it!!

Kimann July 3, 2012 at 10:37 am

Okay, I too am a malificent fan and I’m trying to see if the infuser thing next to the perfume bottle in the first picture has malificent on it or just the rose motif. Can anyone tell? I can see her on the perfume bottle, but not on the other bottle.

josh July 3, 2012 at 10:44 am

Yes it does, here’s sort of a better look at it: http://i.minus.com/ibafWqV50bvgNL.jpg

I messed with the colors a bit to bring out the Maleficent. The picture isn’t very good with the sunlight coming in on the side. They also sell one that looks like this: http://www.easywdw.com/reports4/poiuhssdsbssad27.jpg

Sharon C. July 3, 2012 at 11:11 am

Love these reports. Love DHS.

We had a great chicken salad at DHS. The kids wanted to eat at Pizza Planet, of course. The chicken salad was overflowing with goodies and my mom couldn’t eat all the chicken. She really liked the dressing and all of the veggies (melon too, I think) included. Have you tried it?

josh July 3, 2012 at 11:13 am

Yes, here: http://www.easywdw.com/uncategorized/bus-stop-american-idol-experience-pizza-planet-chicken-salad-muppet-merch-ribs-intact-hdr-hollywood-studios-42912/

“The Pizza Planet Chicken Salad ($7.49). This was another proficient salad that I enjoyed quite a bit. Everything was fresh with crisp lettuce and ripe fruits and vegetables. I’m not ordinarily crazy about balsamic vinaigrette dressing, but this wasn’t overpowering like some tend to be (the Beef Salad from Cosmic Ray’s comes to mind). I would prefer more chicken, but that’s probably never going to happen. Overall, a nice, light, somewhat unique choice.”

RebeccaMcK July 3, 2012 at 11:41 am

@ginette
You’re welcome. Good luck. :-)

RebeccaMcK July 3, 2012 at 11:47 am

@ginette
Forgot to mention….I don’t know if your son is into Squinkies at all (little rubber figures of characters almost the size of pencil-top erasers but a bit bigger, they come in little plastic ball containers and are sold in packs of 2 or sometimes up to 8 or 10 in a package), but there are some from Cars (both movies) in stores. Haven’t seen them on any Disney sites, but there are plenty of Disney Squinkies (might sometimes have a different name but they’ll be on the same shelves in places like Walmart, Target and Toys’R'Us). They’re not kept in the toy aisles with the other Princess Squinkies (and Minnie, etc.) – they’re with whatever Cars toys are available and sometimes near all the Marvel and Toy Story ones. Cute but not for very young kids who might put them in their mouths. I think they’re for ages 4 and up.

cupcake July 3, 2012 at 11:51 am

Oh, wow, I completely missed the fact that Maleficent was on that perfume bottle. Thanks for the clarified pic. That’s really pretty.

I understand ‘subtle’ Disney merchandise, but it’s when the merchandise appears to have NO nod to Disney at all that I get confused. I can surely buy a rose-themed photo frame at other stores for much cheaper. I thought the same with those perfume bottles, but now I get the point!

ginette July 3, 2012 at 11:56 am

thank you, you are so sweet and helpful! I’ll look out for them.

@Aaron_Ardle July 4, 2012 at 6:44 am

Do you ever go in the Writers Stop? It’s the only refreshment place in the studios I’m interested in. Sounds like a good place for a break if you’re not leaving the park in the afternoon.

RebeccaMcK July 4, 2012 at 7:29 am

@ginette
Free shipping code TODAY (I don’t know for how long) on Disney Store’s site…I think the code is “freeship” for all orders, but check on their site.

Amy Weber July 5, 2012 at 11:19 am

The pretzel dog is really good, but if you don’t like dijon mustard (think Gulden’s), ask for it plain – they squirt the mustard inside the roll before sticking the weiner in (yes, I’m 12…). I would much rather have had it plain with some little packets of yellow mustard for dipping.

Terri in So Cal July 6, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Thanks Josh. I couldn’t get the link for the bigger Sunset Sweets menu to work.

Yaelle July 9, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I love Backlot Express and is a repeat stop for us on every trip. I love that the fountain drinks are self serve, and always go back for refills. I usually get the turkey sandwich and share it with my husband (the fact that it’s cut in half makes it a perfect share). Since we like to have 2 lunches in the parks. An early one around 11:30 AM before the lunch crowds and then a second lunch at around 2- 2:30 after the lunch crowds. That way we avoid the crowds and add breaks to the day, as well as we don’t eat too much at one time since the meals are spread out.

Pam July 11, 2012 at 7:16 am

Josh, My family was at Hollywood Studios on that Friday also, so I was scanning all of your pictures for a glimpse of one of us. When I got to the picture of Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner, I saw that my sister, her husband and 2 kids, were in your picture, at the table on the left! That is so much fun! We weren’t able to stay there and eat as we had to look for more “gluten-free friendly” options. I sent my sister this link so they can see their picture. In regards to your salad, I had something similar over at Animal Kingdom, but it was very fresh and delicious. Sorry you had a bad experience! Thanks again for you great touring plans. Our trip couldn’t have gone much smoother!
