Spaceship Earth, Epcot Crowds, New Menu at Lotus Blossom, MAELSTROM FRONT ROW BABY! 2/21/13

by josh on February 22, 2013

We’ll head over to Epcot on what turned out to be a pretty evening.

I ordinarily have an excuse for visiting the theme parks.  That excuse is usually pretty thin – Pocahontas relocating to Bradley Falls or a new drink appearing at the Joy of Tea Stand are two examples.

But there’s really no use for this post.  Lotus Blossom Cafe, the quick service arm of the China Pavilion, has a couple new menu items. If you have something else to do today, the following is completely skippable.

I was trying out my new Sigma F1.4 35mm lens.

The auto-focus on the lens in the dark seemed to be slower than I was hoping.

More and more turnstiles are being converted into RFID.  I still have not seen a date on when Annual Passholders will be able to exchange their passes for an RFID ticket.  Lines at the regular turnstiles seem to be shorter these days as all newly purchased Magic Your Way tickets are RFID-enabled.

This area will transform on the evening of March 5th as Disney sets up for the Food and Wine and Beer and Mixed Drinks and Flower and Garden Festival.

Crowds otherwise were light, though I’m sure we’ll hear some dire stories on the DIS about wall to wall crowds.

We’ll just about walk on Spaceship Earth at the best time to ride it – around 7pm.

Spaceship Earth is one of the more difficult rides to photograph because it’s dark and (hopefully) constantly moving.

Longer waits than we might like at Test Track and Soarin’, but that’s the reality of two attractions that are incredibly popular in a theme park short of “rides.”  Waits next week at this time would be in the 40 to 50 minute range.  Come September, we might see waits that drop down to 20 minutes at Soarin’ and 30 at Test Track.

When I walked up, the posted wait for single rider was 110 minutes, which seemed a little on the long side.  I asked the cast member about it.  She started laughing and changed it to 10.  Single Rider is the easiest way to experience Test Track, with waits that are ordinarily shorter than FASTPASS.  That’s due to the six-person cars.  On Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Expedition Everest, the other two attractions that have single rider lines, you’ve got two people across and a lot of groups come in twos and fours.  If you have four here, they usually put two in front, two in back, and take two single riders.  At Everest, no single riders would board with a group of two, four, six etc.

It’s probably a little dramatic to characterize the Test Track refurbishment as a disaster.  But the attraction has been down at Park open three days in the last week.  Test Track was originally a ride with terrible reliability.  And now that they’ve added another layer of technology that often doesn’t work, you’ve got much bigger problems.  The good news(?) is that because it’s so popular and there really isn’t anywhere else to send people, they often operate the ride without the RFID technology working.  The entire design process could be down and they’ll just funnel people through to ride.

Mission: SPACE’s refurbishment continues.

New-ish merchandise:

The longpants aren’t getting any shorter.  Or on the flip side, they aren’t getting any longer!

A longshirt to go with it.

I want one.

Vinylmation y u do dis?  Actually, Disney is almost completely doing away with the trading boxes at the Parks and resorts.

gooby pls

With Doc McStuffins’ arrival at Disney. Jr. at Hollywood Studios, her merchandise has arrived in stores:

I’m pretty sure this is the same stuff you can find at the Disney Store, where prices would probably be lower.  A lot of the theme park merchandise can be found at the Disney Store – theme park exclusives have a separate tag stating so.

Creepy.

As you’ve probably heard, the Food and Wine Festival is coming to the Flower and Garden Festival.  Food and Wine brings huge crowds to Epcot, particularly on the weekend and it seems inevitable that the Flower and Garden Festival will look more and more like Food and Wine in the coming years.

Disney’s expectations for crowds at this year’s Festival are slightly higher than last year’s, but it’s not a substantial bump.  Once word spreads, my guess is we’ll see a bigger bump in attendance each year moving forward.

Food and Wine brings a more ruckus atmosphere to Epcot.  You’re going to hear a lot more swearing.  I’ve spent a lot of time at Epcot during the Festival over the last two years and I wouldn’t characterize anything I’ve seen as being particularly offensive.  But with young kids, you may want to plan to be somewhere else after 5pm, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays.

My original plan was to grab a quick bite to eat at La Cantina de San Angel at the Mexico Pavilion, but you’re never going to find a table this late.  It’s a small area and people squat at tables ahead of IllumiNations.  I would have rocked my usual garbage can as a place setting, but we’ll be seeing a lot more of that come March 6th and I don’t want to wear you out before the Festival even starts.

Required Pyramid pic.

I had gotten a kick out of this MiceChat post, “A Great, Big Broken Down Tomorrow” that catalogs several problems with Disney World.  While Disney certainly has some problems with hacked maintenance budgets and broken effects, I wasn’t sure using flash pictures on a dark ride and an obscure candy container hanging down from the ceiling at the Confectionery were the best examples.

But we’ll come back as FASTPASSes were still available at 7:45pm.  We’re not going to need them, but why not, right?

Lotus Blossom Cafe has changed up its menu:

It used to look like this:

A Curry replaces the Vegetable Stir Fry and a “Chicken With Hong Kong Style Vegetable Curry over Rice” was added.

Does anybody love Lotus Blossom?  I would consider it to be in the bottom five quick services on property in terms of quality, which is kind of sad since I consider mall Chinese to be serviceable.

With plenty of tables and a relaxed atmosphere, I took one for the team and ordered the Hong Kong Chicken.

I’m not sure if it looks like it, but it was a lot of food.  I thought the curry was actually pretty good – served piping hot with a little bit of spice.  It was hearty with large chunks of potatoes and carrots in a yellow curry sauce.  I think the vegetarian version would be a good choice for vegetarians, though I didn’t come away with any impression of what “Hong Kong Style” meant.  It tasted like a basic yellow curry and very similar to the one over at Boma.

The chicken, on the other hand, was greasy, fatty and didn’t have a lot of flavor.  I took a disgusting half-eaten picture of it to demonstrate.  The chicken was also difficult to cut with plastic flatware on a slippery plate.  I don’t know if anyone else in the world has consumed the Hong Kong Chicken, but feel free to interject with your opinion.  Lotus Blossom would be pretty far down my list of eatery choices at Epcot.

I have no idea why, but this is (I think) the only quick service on property that doesn’t raise its beverage prices in line with the rest of Disney.  So if you’re looking for a fountain beverage, this is your best choice.

On the plus side, China is beautiful at night.  I’d love to visit “the real thing.”

But only if it’s like this version.

There are some people back here.

But far from busy.

I felt kind of silly using FASTPASS since there’s maybe 25 people in line.  You generally want to avoid Maelstrom from 2pm – 7pm when waits are longer.  It usually peaks at 20 to 30 minutes around 4pm when the most people are in this area.

People hate on Maelstrom, but I’d ride it before Soarin’.

Front row!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, I had switched lenses and this one was in “manual focus” mode without me realizing it.  I thought it was kind of funny that it didn’t seem to be focusing, but because I’m stupid I didn’t put two and two together until after disembarking.  But there was no visible damage on Maelstrom.  Stuff goes wrong on the rides from time to time.  This particular scene happens while you’re traveling backwards at a faster speed and I’m not sure you’d notice the damage in the dark even if it was still there.  On one hand, I can understand the “SHUT IT DOWN” sentiment – when something that affects show quality negatively occurs, the ride would ideally be shut down for a short time while it’s fixed.  But on the other hand, it would be a choice of being able to ride with damage that nobody notices versus shutting it down completely for the day.

The reality is that a lot of Disney attractions are old, break, and should probably be replaced altogether.  I’m not sure what Disney’s show quality staff looks like.  Ideally, you’d have a handful of experts that are constantly visiting the attractions in an effort to keep them working well.  But as far I know, that position doesn’t really exist.

Is there a theme park in Norway I can cover?

As a reminder, Epcot does sell bottles of alcohol.

That’s about what two Disney drinks cost.  You may want to pick up a bottle and make a few cocktails in the room before heading out for a $12 Long Island Iced Tea.  2-liter bottles of Coca Cola, Diet Coke, or Sprite run $3.50.  A decent price for a bottle of Vikingfjord (my preferred brand of vodka!) would run you $13-$14, so the markup isn’t that crazy.

As always, you can get in line for an attraction right up until close.  It’s 8:54pm here if memory serves and a few people are getting in line.  If you want to do standby and can’t visit first thing, the end of the day is the second best option.  If you’re skipping IllumiNations and don’t want to crisscross the Park in the morning, you could plan to start with Test Track and end with Soarin’.

To dissuade guests from visiting attractions at the very end of the night, wait times are often exaggerated.  Soarin’ was still posted at 55 minutes.

Not a whole lot going on these days.  Things at Epcot will be a lot more interesting come March 6th.  Mickey and Minnie are moving from Camp Minnie-Mickey to what used to be Beastly Bazaar in “Spring.”  Daisy and Donald will move to Winnie the Pooh’s current spot and the Pooh characters will move to Camp Minnie-Mickey.  With an Annual Pass, you can now get 10% off at Jiko, Hollywood Brown Derby, Shutters, Biergarten, and Boatwright’s.  The Segway tours at Epcot have been discontinued.  But I think that’s it.

So jealous of the Maelstrom front row. Its one of our favorites and agree on Soarin as well – nobody in my family even wants to ride it on our upcoming trip while we’ll hit Maelstrom several times. If only it were just a bit longer.

Also I always loved Lotus Blossom but haven’t had it in years. Maybe it got worse? Or i have really low standards?

Tracey February 22, 2013 at 3:39 am

I love Maelstrom so much!
I even love to watch the movie right after the ride!

Tinker Kell February 22, 2013 at 3:49 am

I’m relieved that Lotus Blossom kept the orange chicken! That’s one of dd’s favorite meals at WDW. Thank you for the Spaceship Earth coverage. That’s a favorite, too!

Are there any updates on when the Sept. schedule may be released?

Shannon February 22, 2013 at 4:09 am

I rode Malestrom two weeks ago (front row!!!) and didn’t notice the damage by the polar bears. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed. Huh.

And no more Segway tours?! Noooo!

All I wanted was a Pepsi February 22, 2013 at 4:17 am

I think the position of WDW “show quality staff” should be filled by someone just reading Kevin Yee and DisBoard….no need to even go to the parks then. Just have those guys do all the legwork for the whole property and you’re set!

(Do I get a commission for this? I’m thinking I should.)

Nicole February 22, 2013 at 4:34 am

I’m assuming that Soarin is no longer running after Illuminations since test track is open? Can you confirm this?

Angry Donald February 22, 2013 at 4:55 am

OK, I will sheepishly raise my hand and admit that I enjoy Lotus Blossom. There is never a long wait, the food (to us) is above average and the seating is good. Long live Lotus Blossom!

Jimmy (formerly James) N February 22, 2013 at 5:19 am

Uncle Dolan can’t wait for the Food and Wine and Flowers and Garden and Tron Track Festival.

John February 22, 2013 at 6:05 am

Thanks for the great report. I loved the pictures of Epcot at night, especially those of China. Also the pictures of Spaceship Earth were great.

We love Chinese food, but what they serve at Lotus Blossom is pretty well at the bottom of the food chain.

Looking forward to the F&W&B&MD&F&G Festival garbage can photos.

Samantha February 22, 2013 at 7:15 am

My son loves Lotus Blossom – it’s his favorite spot in Epcot for quick service….sigh. I consider it a wasted meal, because if I want crap Chinese I have Panda Express down the street from my house and in my mind, they’re about even.

neffernie February 22, 2013 at 7:47 am

I love Lotus Blossom! The Beef Noodle Bowl is pretty good, there is never a wait, and I can always find a table. Plus the mango smoothie is really refreshing come August when by time you get to China all you want to do is melt and die on the sidewalk.

Archie February 22, 2013 at 8:43 am

Nearly went a whole post without alcohol but you snuck it in the end :-)

LisaP February 22, 2013 at 9:18 am

I’ll raise my hand and admit to be a Maelstrom Hater!

twopearls February 22, 2013 at 9:39 am

Nice shots from that new lens! *jealous*.

And I visited “the real thing” about six years ago to adopt my daughter. She LOVED China at Epcot and can’t wait to visit “the real thing” when she’s a few years older…but good Lord, she’ll be looking for Mulan the whole time. Now that I’ve gotten into photography a little, I can’t wait to go back just to take photos!!!

hinkey February 22, 2013 at 9:48 am

Your posts are never skippable! Thanks for the lovely pictures!

Kyle February 22, 2013 at 9:55 am

Hey Josh, Great post! Any plans to update your character prioritization and location pages for each park in the near future?

Adrienne February 22, 2013 at 10:06 am

Uh-oh. No more trading vinylmations? Is this true? I have been stockpiling “sale” ones to give my son for trading purposes in August. I purposely buy ones he won’t want to keep so he can have fun trading. Hmmm…don’t think I can return them. This was one of his favorite things to do last trip. Bummer!

Sarah February 22, 2013 at 10:11 am

Soarin is by far my favorite ride in EPCOT. Somehow, not surprised you don’t like it.

can124 February 22, 2013 at 10:42 am

“People hate on Maelstrom, but I’d ride it before Soarin’.”

True story. I love Maelstrom – “down, down, over the falls!” Just can’t get into Soarin’…just our preference.

Great pics as always. Kind of disappointed to hear about the discontinuation of the Segway tours. Hubby and I thought about doing that the next kid-free trip. Oh well, Disney will get our money in another way. :)

Agnes February 22, 2013 at 11:12 am

Loved the Spaceship Earth pictures, but more importantly… is that a bearded-lady Vinylmation?!

Steph February 22, 2013 at 11:58 am

Love the new lens. The Spaceship pics were awesome.

Susan February 22, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Great pics, Josh. I especially love the flowers and the Universe of energy one. You’re such a great photographer!

RebeccaMcK February 22, 2013 at 2:03 pm

There are no skippable posts….this one was good to me if even only for the nice outdoor pics of Epcot at night. What are the dates of the F&G Festival? I was there just after the end of the one in 2010 but I don’t remember the exact May dates. Was anyone (Josh or anyone else who’s reading) at MK during the “Live with Kelly & Mike” show tapings this week? I only watched it on Wednesday…saw Kelly ride Test Track with her family. That’s about it.

ErinElizabeth February 22, 2013 at 2:15 pm

I agree that Maelstrom doesnt get its due credit. Its a peaceful respite from the hot outdoors & a lot more magical than most rides. I’ve always wished China or Japan would get a similarly sized ride. Both are so beautiful but the focus is basically on the stores.
BTW: We only drink Polish vodka, but your reminder about buying in the park was a good idea!

Robert February 22, 2013 at 3:01 pm

The Spaceship Earth pictures are great, although the guy holding the newspaper always bugs me since the print would be upside down (on the bottom half of the front page). I think at one point his arms were lower and he was reading the headline but now it just looks odd.

On Vinylmation, when I was in WDW last month I could only find a trading box at the Pin Outpost place in Frontierland. Last week I was in California Adventure and the only store still trading vinylmation is Off the Page. The Disney Stores in the mall still trade them, but it does seem to be on the way out.

I ate at Lotus Blossum last year and I’d say it about equal to Panda Express. They were friendly though and fast to clean up the tables.

I didn’t notice any yeti-like malfunction with the polar bear in Maelstrom last month, but I do hate the ceiling tiles when you get into the sunlight area – they are missing, broken or discolored. It wouldn’t cost very much or take much time to just switch these out for clean ones. As for the ride itself, the whole thing feels so random- Viking village, polar bear, trolls, and an oil rig…. Give me Gran Fiesta (or even Rio del Tiempo) over it anytime. I think if GF had a ride entrance outside the building, the line would be longer than Maelstrom. People just seem to walk by the pyramid. Now if they re-themed Maelstrom to be based on Brave, it would work!

Erika February 22, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Maelstrom is one of my kids faves in all of WDW :)

Melanie February 22, 2013 at 5:29 pm

I remember riding Maelstrom back in 1988 when it was the only close to thrilling ride at Epcot. Just dated myself. Anyhow, 8 years later when now 20 year old son was only 4, he shook his little fist at the trolls and shouted, “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size!” Ah, good memories.

Jenny February 22, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Just curious…am I the only own who notices the pictures are often mixed up in the posts recently? Is it just my iPad? For example…when you’re going through and talking about Spaceship Earth, the shirt/merchandise pictures mixed in??

Jenn M February 22, 2013 at 8:24 pm

@ Jenny: That happens to me on my iPad if I don’t wait long enough for it all to load. When my address bar (I don’t know what to call that?) isn’t blue any longer, then I know I can start scrolling down.

bsipe17 February 22, 2013 at 10:54 pm

@Jenny
Took me awhile to figure that out too.
Reload the page when the pictures are not in the right order.

JT February 22, 2013 at 11:33 pm

I’ll admit it. I’m a Maelstrom lover from way back when I first rode in ’89. My favorite part of the film is the footage of the “cutting edge” computers.

Steve February 23, 2013 at 3:56 am

@Robert: Brave was set in Scotland, not Norway. So Brave would actually be a better fit in the UK pavilion (at the moment anyway ;) ).

Some lovely photos of Epcot there!

Jasmine February 23, 2013 at 5:33 am

Just read “Great, Big Broken Down Tomorrow.” Looks to me like someone has too much time on their hands.

Patty57 February 23, 2013 at 8:31 am

You know where Maelstrom kind of backs up to the outside? Did that used to be further out? Somehow I remember it as being a little more “thrilling”.

Nolarookie February 23, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Wow, the broken down tomorrow guy’s blog was sad on so many levels

Mike February 23, 2013 at 1:58 pm

Hmm so they exaggerate times to get people to not go at night? Kind of an underhanded thing to do… where’s my Grand Floridian upgrade!!!!

Though it does remind me how the state freeway company puts cones up and purposefully congests traffic so people won’t drive as fast.

annie February 23, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Maelstrom over Soarin’?! I completely skipped Maelstrom last time I was at Epcot. Soarin’ is my favorite ride in all of WDW.

josh February 23, 2013 at 2:35 pm

It’s very easy to order at Lotus Blossom and the staff is among the friendliest you’ll encounter. I would only stipulate that there’s never anyone there because it’s always been bad.

Soarin’ stops letting guests enter the queue at Park close like it did prior to Test Track’s closure. The Land Pavilion/Character Spot only operated from 9pm – 10pm during Test Track’s refurbishment.

Character updates are in the update queue like a lot of other pages. Visit Kennythepirate.com for the latest on meet locations and times.

Vinylmation trading has been cut from most Park and Resort locations. See this: http://vinylmationkingdom.com/2013/01/29/reduced-trade-boxes-at-wdwdlr-coming-feb-1st/ for more information. Here’s a more positive reaction: http://vinylmationkingdom.com/2013/02/23/thinking-outside-the-blox-in-defense-of-the-single-box/

Flower and Garden runs from March 6th to May 19th. I didn’t see the Regis and Kathy show or whatever it’s called now.

I don’t much care for Soarin’. You sit there in a chair that rocks a little bit with someone else’s feet in your face while you watch a screen. Granted I’ve never been hang gliding before, but I don’t think that’s what it’s like. And I find the constant scene changing to further erode any sensation that I’m doing anything but sitting in a large simulator. Add all of that to the fact that the film is (actually) in bad shape with dust, hair, etc. creating further distractions and you’d find me on Maelstrom before Soarin’ just about any day. Maelstrom also takes 8 minutes with FASTPASS instead of 25.

RebeccaMcK February 23, 2013 at 6:53 pm

I like Soarin’ but the screen in DCA’s version is in better condition than the Epcot version’s. The spots on the screen there are distracting to me and I wish they’d fix it. But my kiddo, who can’t detect those problems, loves the ride so I enjoy it through her eyes. Three years ago my hubby had never been on Soarin’ before (he had never been to Epcot or DCA), and now he’s a fan too.

Clover February 23, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Turkey leg boxers? Mkay.

kelliinkc February 23, 2013 at 8:49 pm

Love both Soarin’ and Maelstrom. Of course I think I have always been in the front row on Soarin so maybe that has something to do with it…..

Nini February 24, 2013 at 10:43 am

My 11 year old son LOVES Maelstrom! Of course, he calls it the Norwegian boat ride… wonder what he will do when we go on an NCL cruise? LOL…

Kevin February 25, 2013 at 10:58 am

I also find the Animator’s Collection dolls to be a bit creepy. But my 4-yr-old daughter, which is an expert on such things, thinks they are adorable and the best of the Disney dolls. so much for Dad’s opinion!

Dan Young February 25, 2013 at 4:50 pm

Some of the best shots ever of Spaceship Earth – NICE!!! Sorry I missed you, Josh. While you were on the east side I was hanging out drinking martinis in the Rose & Crown!

Sandy k March 2, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Hey Josh – Fantastic pictures! Wish I had taken them. I was there with the family the same week you were taking your pics, so it’s like seeing it through my eyes and wishing I had thought of that angle on the snapdragons! I hoped to take great pictures in Spaceship Earth, but they did not turn out near as wonderful as yours. I had very few successfully framed and exposed together. There’s the rub.

This was my first time to this website. I believe I will have to bookmark it! Thanks for all the memories!

Ronni March 9, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Yo, your night photos are beautiful. I’ve been noticing that in your posts lately. Beautiful work. :)
