The original title of this post was going to be, “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DISNEY WORLD INSANELY CROWDED THROW OUT ALL CROWD CALENDARS,” but then I realized most of you are probably old and I don’t want to give anyone a heart attack. I think I went on a rant about how “Free Dining” has almost no impact on overall crowds last time, so I’ll spare you another lecture. According to the Crowd Calendar, the overall crowd level has dropped all the way to a “Level 2,” which should indicate some of the lowest crowds of the year. We’re headed out to Epcot, which was the “most recommended Park.” I may or may not get back tomorrow to look in on things before heading over to Magic Kingdom to check out the “State of the Monorail” on a night when Magic Kingdom closes at 7pm. Speaking of which, want to hear a rumor? Yes? This is the last year that Night of Joy will be scheduled. Attendance is very poor this year and Disney had an immense amount of trouble booking quality acts. Not sure if that one’s going around or not. It’s true though, so I don’t know if that makes it a rumor or a fact.
Just as an aside, my main purpose of visiting Epcot today was to take pictures of buildings, menus, and condiment bars. Now in the other three major theme parks, people generally snicker at me in English or Spanish. In the World Showcase, I heard people snickering at me in at least fifteen different languages. It probably didn’t help that I had my Duffy Ears on.

Granted this is at about 3pm, but you may recall the lines at the Ticket/Transportation Center this past Saturday. There’s a few people way off in the distance, but none of these windows are open and there’s a total of six people in line overall.

More of the same at the monorail. I have it on good authority that once Mickey’s Parties start, the Resort Monorail will run until 10:30pm and the Express Monorail will run through 8pm. I’m actually more concerned about what’s going to happen during regular 8pm closes at Magic Kingdom come November. At least during Mickey’s Parties, Disney will be running bus transportation until 1:30am to shuttle everyone to/from the Party. Most likely, that transportation plan will include a bus that goes from the Contemporary to the Polynesian to the Grand Floridian and back to Magic Kingdom. In other words, it’s basically a monorail on wheels (although the monorails technically have wheels, I suppose). However, when Magic Kingdom closes at 8pm, there’s no reason to run buses to and from Magic Kingdom after 9:30pm. Will Disney continue to run that bus to the Monorail Deluxe resorts at 10pm? Will the Resort Monorail continue to run like it does during Mickey’s Parties? There’s no answer at the moment.

Looks busy. Should we risk it?

That’s Stitch in the background. No one lined up.

This is all one group at Daisy Duck too.

Is it open?

Yep.

Still a lot of 40th Anniversary merchandise available. You’ll find most of it in the “Art of Disney” stores in each of the theme parks. The best store in the theme parks for 40th anniversary merchandise is at Hollywood Studios in the Animation Building in the Animation Courtyard (in the back of the area where Voyage of the Little Mermaid and Disney Jr. Live on Stage are).

Oh no! The wait times board is down until Saturday September 24th! How will we know if it’s busy? I see at least six people here if I look hard enough.

Don’t worry. Pins are still for sale on the back side.
This is the new menu at Electric Umbrella:

The Southwest Black Bean Flatbread replaces the Greek Salad. I’ll add it to my list of entrees to try. It looks like a nice option for vegetarians or those of us just trying to mix it up a little bit. There’s also your standard Angus Bacon Burger on the menu.
The following Halloween merchandise is all from MouseGear – the huge merchandise complex in Future World.

Some new items. This is a mirror thing of some sort or another – $9.39.

We’ve seen these before, but they’re really good looking – $11.95.

The two items up front are antennae toppers – $3.95. The lower image is a bad picture of a bracelet with orange/black Mickey head beads – $5.95.

This tote actually lights up. The red sticker highlights the “on/off switch” that turns on lights that blink around the bag. Neat! – $9.95.

Light up ghost lanyards – $6.37 I think…sort of an odd price point.

A better look at some of the apparel. Shirts are $21.95. I really like the one in the second image on the right hand side.

More lanyards, pins, and bracelets.

This is at 3:30pm. Only in September and a bit in January/February.

Stood here for a minute and saw three people enter the standby line. The single rider line is listed at zero minutes.

Kringla Bakeri treats in the Norway Pavilion. I think the phrase, “It’s all good, baby” originated here.

Up through China.

A rare opportunity to see the bridge up and the “huge globe” being moved into World Showcase Lagoon for IllumiNations.

Say what you will about Lotus Blossom Cafe, but they refuse to raise their fountain beverage prices! 50 cents less than anywhere else!

Looks like the “secret” is extra-safe today. If you really want to upset the Disney Vacation Club people, walk by and yell, “Looks like the secret’s safe” whenever you see one of their many stands.
This is the new menu at Liberty Inn:

Wow! Some new items at the usually-boring Liberty Inn too!! A new Smokehouse Burger, new Grilled Chicken Flatbread, and new Southwest Bean Burger.

It was a tough choice between the Flatbread and the Bean Burger, but I ultimately went with the Flatbread. This was freshly made with high quality ingredients – crunchy lettuce, three slices of bacon, and the chicken covers more of the flatbread than it looks in the picture. There’s a smallish slice of tomato underneath the chicken and some sort of sauce. Only two complaints – not nearly hot enough and the sauce didn’t have a lot of flavor. Luckily, Liberty Inn offers all-you-care-to-eat honey mustard which livened it right up. Overall, it was a welcome change from an establishment that historically has the “boringest (probably not a word)” menu of any Disney World quick service. Very nice to see a few new options if you’ve got kids that won’t eat anywhere else. And you can’t beat the air-conditioned seating (which you won’t find in any other World Showcase quick service). Outdoor seating is also available should you want to watch the Fife & Drum Corps.

Not a lot of people here. Once the numbers come in, I think we’ll be in the 12,000-15,000 range, when an average day at Epcot sees about 26,500 people.

You might recall last week (or possibly the week before that) that I mentioned sales were down sharply at the new Kabuki Cafe when compared to the old Kakigori Stand. Cast members now have new uniforms and there’s a woman out front greeting people passing by the stand.

Here’s a better look at the new stand sitting outside the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan Pavilion.

Mmmmmm hmmmmmmm.

Not to single out Tangierine Cafe here, but this is indicative of Epcot as a whole. There’s no one here, just as there was no one at Liberty Inn or anywhere else. “Literally” no one.

Kringla in Norway is my true love, but should anything happen to her, there’s always the Boulangerie Patisserie nestled in the back of the France Pavilion.

It has been sort of an odd September thus far, weather wise. High temperatures have been lower than average, but the humidity is relentless. Overcast skys have been common.

Some serious painting going on in the Canada Pavilion. This is supposed to continue for a few months.

Not a ton of people coming towards us…I guess I’m not as popular as I thought.

Oh my gosh!! Crowds are 250% heavier at Spaceship Earth now than when we arrived!!

A uniform, a hat, nothing to do all day – the perfect job.
I don’t mean to brag, but it looks like I got this one right, doesn’t it?

{ 40 comments… read them below or add one }
Yep u got it right…I hate I had to cancel my trip for next week…now trying to decide the fist week in June or over MLK day…any advice….love the site
josh, where is the cheapest place to get a beer at Epcot? Man, I want YOUR JOB!!!!!! I am smacking myself for not booking a September vacation, it looks SO beautiful empty WOW!
We will be in Epcot next Thursday. It was the only day that worked with our schedule. It is a 1 crowd day, but Epcot is in the red. Will we be more crowded than today? I am hoping we can drop the touring plan after the first couple of rides.
Great review. They are sooo helpful for first time Disney visitors!
I read the entire post anxiously awaiting the photo of you in the Duffy ears!
Love your site! So glad I found it (but wish I would not have renewed TGM, yours is much better). We will be at WDW in 11 days and I sure hope we have the same September low crowds that you saw today. We will be sticking to your recommended parks, with the exception of one Friday morning when we will be in Epcot, but we will only be there for our YES program and then hop over to MK. Thanks for all the info and advice, Josh!
really hoping when we visit in 14 days it is like this, the kids will spend their time getiing on and off test track and soarin. Your pics make me so excited!!
Wow those pix were empty. I’m surprised they don’t offer something to entice people.
PS I liked the Flatbread review. I feel like I know what to expect. Do you think the quick service places serve the food warm instead of hot because people got burned. It just seems too uniform to be a fluke that food is never served hot.
Did you just call me old?
You are really making me fall in love with Kringla! We didn’t make it in there on our trip last summer and now I am seriously adding it to my tour plans. I don’t think anyone will complain. It looks incredible!
I just found you and I LOVE all the detail and pictures. Your site is so full of information and I really find the “best times to go” section very helpful. Thanks for a great place to find everything about DW!!!
hey Josh, my family would love to see if there is any Tinkerbell Halloween merchandise for sale in the parks. Thanks!
Josh, this is awesome. We leave tomorrow and will be following your plan. I showed these pics to my husband and we are so pumped to see the parks anywhere close to this empty.
I see School bread!
define “old” ha!
Is it just me or does the menu item called Kaki Pea not sound very pleasant.
Another great writeup. Looks like it was a extremely busy at Epcot. LOL
Might have to schedule a Sept trip in the following years to come.
Great walk-through AGAIN!!! I’m really, really hoping we find the same “crowds” when we’re in WDW this coming Sun through Fri.! Hope to bump into you somewhere!
Fantastic! I hope we have ‘crowds’ like that in February!
How old is ‘old’? I hit the big 3-0 this year and I’m feeling quite ancient some days!
Billy – MLK is sooner ^_^ and less busy overall, especially if you’re planning a couple of days around the holiday weekend. June is hotter (not necessarily a bad thing, depending) and more crowded overall, but you’ve also got Star Wars Weekends (not necessarily a good thing) at Hollywood Studios.
Ginette – Nowhere ^_^ China has Tsing Tao bottles for $5.75. Fife and Drum Tavern in American Adventure has Sam Adams Specialty for $6.25. Moosehead in Canada is $6.75. Bass Ale in UK is $7.50. They’re mostly in the $6-$8 range. Generally speaking, it’s probably worth the $1 extra to get something a little out of the ordinary.
FlowerPower – You’ll be fine. A little more crowded than today, but certainly nothing to worry about.
TrueBlue – It’s probably just that things cool off so fast once they come out of the kitchen. The Flatbread was “made fresh” so it should have been reasonably hot at some point.
Chanon – I am sure you are the exception.
Tam – Don’t worry – there is a ton of stuff. She even has her own store in Magic Kingdom. I’ll try to remember to snap some pictures this evening.
Dawn – Anyone older than I am is old.
Danielle – I am not sure what you would say if you actually wanted to order it. Maybe just point at the bag. “This one.”
Amy – I can confirm that is indeed old.
Great review wish i was there! I dream of those type “crowd days”
Ohhh I am so glad you took a picture of the Bellydancer =)
Josh – Since Epcot was recommended, what what the non-recommended parks look like in low crowd periods like this? if you use a plan will you be okay?
Oh my!! I just love these reviews of slow days. Hoping the crowds stay away until after the 24th.
I will be in Disney next friday til the following tuesday and hoping to see low crowds like this
soooo excited! I guess September IS THE PERFECT time huh
I can’t believe Soarin’ had a 10minute wait! Wow, I hope it is that dead when we go in just over 2 weeks on your recommended days.
Thank you for taking pictures of more Epcot menus! I can not wait to see them all together like you did for the other parks. I guess it is good you waited, since so many menus have changed recently.
I actually prefer a few more people in the parks, this looks kinda depressing. I’d like about a 25 minute standby for soarin. Enough people to be interesting but not enough to be a crowd.
Love your updates! I am using your recent menu pictures to update my snack choices while there in 4 weeks! Hope the parks aren’t too crowded but I’m expecting more due to F&WF, of course! Quick question, I’m trying to read the DDP symbols at Kringla and can’t quite read them all. Can you tell me which ones are SC? Also is the Rice Cream still there? I heard a rumor it wasn’t.
Are the pretzels still a SC? I love Kringla like you. One of the best use of a QS meal credit there is. And so good. Can’t wait to be there myself and report back on any SC changes. TIA!
I’m really kicking myself for not buying the Mickey Head Halloween sprinkles I saw everywhere. And I would have paid for your breakfast at Tusker House if I could have seen you in Duffy ears! You never even presented that option!
We are planning a couples only trip in 2012 for our 20th anniversary which is October 10. I was planning the week after Jersey Week but September would be great too. Get the kids into school and then take off! Any opinions on that?
No one here is old. Disney keeps us young. Or at least young at heart. And you need someone to take your picture wearing those Duffy ears. You, not the person taking the photo. Have someone from your army do it. Do you ever go on the rides when you’re there? You have to have some fun. I know you did ToT because we saw the ride pic in one of your walkabout blogs a while back.
I wish the crowd level always looked like that or just a tad more crowded, but then I guess the parks would go out of business. Some day when the kiddo isn’t in school (I guess that would be in about twelve years) I want to go there in September. But I hope October will have some cooler temps anyway. A month from today I’ll be at DHS. A month from yesterday I’ll be at DAK. A month from the day before yesterday I’ll be in Orlando checking into the Poly. YIPPEE!!!!!!!
Cady – I always respond to that question like a good lawyer – “It depends.” Mondays and Saturdays at Magic Kingdom that aren’t recommended can get pretty busy. Epcot on Friday’s with evening Extra Magic Hours are busy. Animal Kingdom is pretty busy on non-recommended Wednesdays. Hollywood Studios can get crowded when it’s not recommended. Usually the “daily analysis” for a particular day will indicate “how bad” it’s going to be. I try to point out when days aren’t going to be particularly busy and days that are going to be much busier than you would expect given the low overall crowd level. If you have a specific day/Park in mind, feel free to post a comment and I’ll speak more specifically to what you’re planning.
Terri – Here are the full size pictures of the Kringla items:

It looks like the pretzels aren’t a snack credit.
Kara – I only wear Duffy at Epcot. I can ship you a container of sprinkles if you like. Send me a private message on the forum. September would obviously be less crowded, but hot and humid. There isn’t a ton of stuff going on in September either unless you plan it for later in the month to do some of the Food/Wine stuff. Personally, I prefer November, which is much cooler and doesn’t have a huge tradeoff with crowds. On the downside, it’s further away ^_^
Rebecca – I occasionally ride, but mostly just to see “actual waits with FASTPASS” or some other kind of “data.” I like to keep things decently fresh – I’m not one of the people that wants to be able to recite the entire spiel from Spaceship Earth by heart or anything like that.
Josh, I am wondering about Nov 16/17, I had planned DHS on the 16th which at the time was a non-Fantasmic and AK on the next day which was a recommended day, now that only day fantasmic isn’t offered is Thursday, would you recommend switching to AK on Wed and DHS on Thursday or sticking to the original plan?
Forgot to add we have park hoppers, so we can pop somewhere else each evening. Thanks for any insight
Josh the girls in Norway are the cutest in all of Epcot, your love of their pastry is just code.
Ah! This is exactly why I go in September every year. We’ll be there in 8 days!!
Thanks for the pictures link. (I’ve updated my SC list, again) Bummer about the sweet pretzel. I know a lot of people love them, especially with a SC.
Cady – I would probably stick with what you have, since Animal Kingdom on that Wednesday would be pretty crowded. The trick to Hollywood Studios, as I constantly repeat, is getting there prior to open and hitting Toy Story Mania and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster immediately after opening. After that, there aren’t a lot of concerns.
PEACHES – Please keep my secret safe.
Terri – You can always ask about the Pretzel for a snack credit. They might “help you out.”
We generally go in September but I’ve never seen crowds that low. I kept wondering if you just were in the park before it opened. Usually we head down around the 23-26th, but we leave next Wed, the 14th, this year and I am hoping it stays as slow as this. I can’t wait. If it does stay this slow for our trip next week, it may just be worth missing the F&W by a week or so.
Josh- we are heading to Disney in 19 days (Sept 30-oct 8th), I hope we see crowds like this during our week!! What do you think??
Thanks for the update, the rest of our days are all on your recommendations, just the DHS was throwing me. We are being naughty and hopping over to MK on that Monday night, but we really wanted to see the Electric Light Parade and Wishes. Thanks so much for all your input, I was going to do touring plans, but felt like I got everything I need here.
Hi! We were there at Epcot on 9/8, didnt see us in any photos though
I thought Labor day weekend was busy, but Monday eve- Friday were great. I enjoy this site and followed your park tips, they were great.
