Big Top Souvenirs, Dumbo FASTPASS Changes and Barnstormer Added, Nearing Completion – 10/2/12 Magic Kingdom

by josh on October 3, 2012

Update: Fixed the “Larger” links on the treats’ cases.

Storybook Circus nears completion.  Barnstormer, the first of two Dumbo spinners, the bathrooms, and the Storybook Circus train station opened back in May.  Casey Jr. Splash Zone and the second Dumbo spinner followed in June.  On Sunday September 30th, Big Top Souvenirs and the yellow circus tent containing Dumbo and Barnstormer FASTPASS opened.  And Pete’s Silly Sideshow is expected to open tomorrow, October 4th.  The website will be on hand either Thursday or Friday for that.

Big Top Souvenirs occupies the large blue tent that you’ll come to first on your left across from Dumbo.

The tent is fantastically themed.

Ladders lead up to the high flying trapeze.

Checkouts are themed like train cars.

Carpeting identifies the center ring.

Even the beverage cooler is themed like a train car that transports penguins.

The focal point of the tent is supposed to be Big Top Treats, which features a show kitchen similar to Main Street Confectionery.

I felt like it was marred by the amount of random generic merchandise that was strewn throughout the Tent.  I’m not one to knock easy availability of the most popular items, but there is stuff everywhere, making it difficult to move around when it’s crowded.

Goofy’s Glaciers make their way over from his Candy Company at Downtown Disney.  Think Icee.  A look at the treats that were available:

The goodies were replicas of what’s available at the Confectionery, but we can expect (hope for) some exclusive treats moving forward.

The “show kitchen” aspect didn’t seem to be a big deal, but they do make some of the treats in-house while you have the opportunity to watch.

Some unique merchandise and/or merchandise not previously seen:

Cute stuff that we can probably expect more of.

I don’t have the heart to stick my camera in cast members’ faces, so I zoom in like a creep from afar.  The costumes are cute with oversized yellow ties and shirts, but as you can tell they aren’t the most flattering, like most Disney costumes.  She’ll probably have a different one on tomorrow.

I liked the male version more.  It helps add to the sense that you’re really at the circus.

Overall, Big Top Souvenirs is a winner.  I think they should take out half of the merchandise so it’s easier to focus on what they do offer.  They really don’t need another outlet for soap dispensers and pillow pals and the amount of merchandise they do have detracts from what’s special.

Outside, the themed carts have arrived.

The offerings are the same, but it seems like it’s more fun to buy popcorn from a circus train car.

Further in, closer to Pete’s Silly Sideshow and the Yellow Tent, you’ll find a courtyard area with two additional carts.

The carts are inspired.

I’m not up on my soft pretzel making techniques, but what about a Dumbo Pretzel?  A spicy cheese sauce?  A pizza pretzel with marinara?  It seems like offering something rarer and in demand would draw people further into Storybook Circus.  Few are going to purposefully traipse back here for a Dasani and a Churro.

Instead, the area’s a ghost town.  Expect that to change when the Silly Sideshow opens, but I’m still not sure how popular uncovered tables are going to be in the July sun/rain in the back of Storybook Circus.

I have a similar critique here at the Hot Dog cart.  The whole thing revolves around Dumbo, and you’re not selling elephant ears?  This sort of thing seems like such a no brainer.  How about Hand-Battered Corn Dogs?

You’re killing me.

Pete’s Silly Sideshow sits back here too, where you’ll be able to meet Minnie & Daisy in one line and Goofy and Donald at the other.

You’ll also find advertisements for the various activities all around:

You’re going to have a tough time convincing me this isn’t Scar as a boy.

In the Yellow Tent near the back of Storybook Circus, you’ll find FASTPASS distribution for Barnstormer and Dumbo along with picnic tables to rest.

Barnstormer on the left.

And Dumbo on the right.  Both display the current return time and the posted wait.

I pulled the Barnstormer FASTPASS at 3:20pm and noticed that it said I can pick up another FASTPASS at 4pm, when my window opens.  This is standard.  I tried to pull a Dumbo FASTPASS anyway and was able to.  It printed with a Surprise FASTPASS for Mickey’s PhilharMagic, which we know is worthless because you can virtually always walk in to the next show.  So at least for the time being, you can collect FASTPASSes for both Barnstormer and Dumbo, but will need to wait until the window opens to collect FASTPASSes for another attraction.  This makes it convenient to return to Storybook Circus and hit both.  You may want to pull them before visiting Pete’s Silly Sideshow or plan to spend some time at Big Top Souvenirs or Casey Jr. Splash Zone.  It’s a bit of a hike out to Dumbo, even from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh or other Fantasyland/Tomorrow attraction.

With Dumbo having dedicated FASTPASS, the machines near PhilharMagic only dispense Winnie the Pooh again.

The Yellow Tent is expected to have electrical outlets for guests to charge their electronics at some point.

The lighting package seems like it will live up to Dumbo’s and the rest of the Circus with a variety of miniature chandeliers, lanterns, and lights.

Someone alert WDWMAGIC.  Casey isn’t blinking at the moment, making it 200% more likely that children will pee in the Splash Zone.  If you would like to experience Casey Jr. in the way it was originally designed, you may want to delay or even cancel your vacation until it’s fixed.

Heading out of the one and only.  As I’ve stated before, the theming in Storybook Circus is incredibly immersive.  You might see bashing it based on low quality cell phone pictures and the opinions of others, but I can assure you that it will exceed expectations, even if you’re expecting a lot.

Elsewhere, The Cat replaces Daisy at the Flag Pole.  Daisy moves in to Pete’s Silly Sideshow on a permanent basis.

It’s a recommended Party day at 2:38pm.

Remember that you want to visit the Town Square Princesses before 4pm to guarantee meeting Rapunzel.

Unique Halloween cupcakes at the Confectionery.

Configuring a FASTPASS+ entrance for Tomorrowland Speedway I would guess.

Water was flowing all over the Mermaid rockery.  It’s going to look outstanding.

Making good time at the Mine Coaster.

From the back side.

Additional track installation.

Work intensifies on the Urinate with Rapunzel Experience (trademark).

From the Mansion queue.

FASTPASS lines haven’t been too backed up lately, but this is the return line for Pan, backed up all the way past the FASTPASS machines.  It’s more of an exception rather than the rule, but you can potentially run long FASTPASS return lines.

That’s what’s going on at the Magic Kingdom these days, as we take a brief recess from the Food and Wine Festival.  Storybook Circus is looking great and I’m looking forward to Pete’s Silly Sideshow opening tomorrow.

Laaaaaammmbert the sheepish lion, Laaaaaammbert is always tryin to be a wild and wooly sheep, Lambert the sheepish lion..

Childhood flashbacks! Awesome.

Liz October 3, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Rob, I had forgotten all about that song but it came back instantly upon reading your comment! Love it!

James N October 3, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I’ve always wondered why they don’t sell elephant ears ANYWHERE at Disney. I understand that a funnel cake is essentially an elephant ear with some holes in it so what’s the point in having two similar items but come on. I agree with you on this one that if any place in Disney should have elephant ears it would be Storybook Circus.

Michele October 3, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I love how the train cars for check out are the Monkey cars. : ) And, I haven’t really been up on Storybook Circus – but is it “just” a meet and greet area (other than the already opened attractions) or will there me more, as advertised in those posters?

Another great walk about Josh. Thank you.

Rob October 3, 2012 at 12:54 pm

@Liz. I have that song memorized to this day, one of my favorite Disney shorts as a kid – not sure why but it stuck. I love how they’re incorporating some of those and some of the more obscure older Disney stuff into Storybook Circus. The theming is just spectacular, imagineering at it’s best.

Kelli October 3, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Thank you for the awesome rundown of the Storybook Circus Josh! We leave in twelve days and so far, I’ve been in denial about all of this opening. Just way out of the loop I guess. Great post!

Rob October 3, 2012 at 12:58 pm

I’d pay whatever they wanted to charge me for that Lambert poster on a t-shirt. Come on Disney!

Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian October 3, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Nice post! I just got back from Disney a few days ago and I was pretty impressed with everything going on in Storybook Circus. My previous trip was only 1 year ago and there was nothing there at that time. It’s kind of fun to see how far they can go in a year.

aobrien October 3, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Your pictures are amazing, but not even they do the construction justice. I was there last week and was amazed by how big the Mine Train Coaster is really going to be. Fantasyland is going to look fantastic when it’s done! (I hope that didn’t sound like I was bashing your pictures, because they really are great)

Ryan B October 3, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Josh, my family and I will be in MK on Friday. If you happen to be there and I happen to see you I might work up the courage to walk up and say Hi. I will not zoom in like a creeper and snap a photo. Thanks for all the help and updates.

gator girl October 3, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Hee hee! “The website will be on hand…” Is this like when the Queen says “We are not amused”?

Annnnnnd now I’m jonesing for a Disneyland hand-dipped corn dog.

Katie October 3, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Storybook Circus was amazingly themed, and it was even better at night.

weepstah October 3, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Loving that Lambert reference too. And Salty the Seal – someone is really doing their homework in Imagineering. I hope they have the Storybook Circus team lined up for another project – fantastic work!

JasonMiller October 3, 2012 at 2:06 pm

@Michelle…I believe the Storybook Circus area encompasses Barnstormer, Double Dumbo, Casey Jr Splash Area, Pete’s Silly Sideshow meet and greets, Big Top Souveniers and the Fantasyland Railroad station. If I’m missing anything I’m sure we’ll find out shortly.

JasonMiller October 3, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Forgot to say I love that Humphrey the Bear is making an appearence as well. This is a link to one of my favorite shorts ever…that song is stuck in my head already.

Amanda October 3, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Seriously, elephant ears? You want to EAT DUMBO? Sheesh.

Melissa October 3, 2012 at 2:28 pm

So does this mean that Minnie will not appear with Mickey any more?

LoriABil October 3, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Will someone clue me in…What is an elephant ear?

TriSeb October 3, 2012 at 2:49 pm

Thanks Josh, I know what to expect in 2 months!

haven_alise1997 October 3, 2012 at 3:01 pm

@JasonMiller – I was totally wondering about that bear! Now I know.

@Amanda – I was thinking the same thing! Maybe Disney doesn’t want to
traumatize the wee babes. lol.

Rachel October 3, 2012 at 3:08 pm

We are going to be there October 28th – November 3rd… I am extremely dissapointed that I’m going to miss the opening of the new Fantasyland!!! *sobs*

Do you think there is any way that we would get a peek? Are they still allowing people into the Belle Storybook thingy, or is that over with? We only make it out to WDW from south Texas every 2-3 years, so I’ll have to wait quite a while to see it if I don’t get to this time.

Oh, also, I just recently discovered your blog, and I absolutely love it… thanks for giving it to us straight and not sugar coating anything Josh. When people are trip planning, they need the kind of information you provide, not the crap found other places.

Monica October 3, 2012 at 4:21 pm

I agree, everything looks fantastic.

But those Mickey ears, all I can hear is Dat Dat Da Da Da Da…Afro Circus.
Wrong movie, wrong company, but that’s what popped in my head.

nolarookie October 3, 2012 at 4:55 pm

what is Pete’s Silly Side show going to be?

Josh S October 3, 2012 at 5:46 pm

LOL @ the WDWMAGIC joke… Great update! I’m liking your posts!

Stacy October 3, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Really? 23 comments and not a one about the Urinate with Rapunzel Experience? Really?

twopearls October 3, 2012 at 5:50 pm

@loriabil: an elephant ear is basically a piece of fried dough!

keri October 3, 2012 at 5:56 pm

@Jason Thank you for reminding me of Humphrey’s name! Those were always some of my favorite cartoons as a kid (I also loved the old school Chip & Dale ones, and almost anything with Pluto).

Ferg October 3, 2012 at 6:08 pm

Urinate With Rapunzel Experience. HAHAHAHAHA! I almost spewed the water I was drinking all over the computer!

RebeccaMcK October 3, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Urinate with Rapunzel, lol.
I loved Lambert! It’s a short on one or two of the Disney movie dvds we have. I remember the seal, too, from a Mickey cartoon or two.
Storybook Circus looks awesome.

Julie G. October 3, 2012 at 7:33 pm

@Amanda – That was my same thought. Isn’t it a little cruel and disrespectful to eat an elephant’s ear near Dumbo!? Josh – I enjoyed your passing comment about “The Cat” taking Daisy’s place. Marie is really an obscure character to do M&Gs when you think about other characters who are no where to be found.

Just FYI, if anyone is around the Magic Kingdom Thursday, there is a group of very special children and their families that will be there as part of a trip of a lifetime with a charity started by the radio morning show Ace and TJ. You can read about their trip at http://www.grinkids.org.

Cindi October 3, 2012 at 7:58 pm

The cat???? C’mon Josh, that’s Marie from the Aristocats!!! Isn’t she cute? Everybody wants to be a cat… great song.
It’s funny how Disney put the sales clerks at the Big Top in monkey cars, and the refrigerated drinks in the penguin cars. I love the little touches and attention to detail like that that Disney does so well.

Marianna October 3, 2012 at 8:41 pm

This was a pleasant surprise. :) Thanks for the walk through. Gonna be gorgeous at night.

Laird October 4, 2012 at 3:42 am

@Stacy: I literally laughed out loud at the Urinate with Rapunzel Experience.

Tracey H October 4, 2012 at 5:38 am

Thanks so much for the update! Now I’m really wishing that last year’s pix. with Mickey and Minnie from Main St. were clearer and did not get blurry as apparently you will no longer be able to get that shot! I think it will disappoint many people that they can’t get a picture with the 2 of them, but oh well!
So excited to see this with my own eyes in 3 weeks!

Tracey H October 4, 2012 at 5:41 am

Forgot to add that I think it’s weird Marie the cat left France and is on Main St…they really couldn’t come up with some other character to put there???

Katie D October 4, 2012 at 6:55 am

Now, it may very well be because I’m just coming off a 12 hour night shift on 5 hours of sleep, but I don’t get the Urinate with Rapunzel reference … is it going to be a bathroom? I’m feeling very slow right now, as I usually get (and completely crack up over) Josh’s awesome snarky sarcasm! HELP! :)

Danica October 4, 2012 at 6:56 am

I had to go back and read this one again, several things made me lol – “The cat” – we had to buy Aristocats so my kiddos would know who she is! It is a little strange that she is no longer in the France Pavilion, but who am I to judge the decisions Disney makes? “Urinating with Rapunzel” ???? I don’t think I want to know…and the Lambert song has been stuck in my head since reading this yesterday….that brought back some memories!

Meghan October 4, 2012 at 7:39 am

@katie and @danica The rapunzel meet and greet will also have restrooms.

Paige October 4, 2012 at 9:07 am

Lambert is one of my all time favs along with Ferdinand. I wish Disney would actually play their classic cartoons on the Disney Channel. My girls love them more than ANYTHING they have on there now…and what’s with this BLAM! stuff??
I thought Storybook Circus was beautiful. Just got back last night and am in withdrawals. =(

Donna October 4, 2012 at 11:38 am

@Paige I agree – Those classic Disney cartoons are no where to be seen these days. It’s a shame!

Josh, Thanks for the walkthrough of the new fantasyland. I love the theming! Looking forward to seeing it in person very soon!

mollie October 4, 2012 at 5:21 pm

lol! I see others beat me to “the cat’ comment! She needs her brothers Berliouse and Toulouse! I love “the Cat” shes one of my faves! Thanks for the updates! 21 days and Ill be there following your plans!

Pod October 5, 2012 at 9:43 am

“If you would like to experience Casey Jr. in the way it was originally designed, you may want to delay or even cancel your vacation until it’s fixed”.

LOL. I would only do that if it were the Yeti we were talking about.

Psac October 5, 2012 at 10:26 am

Regarding the elephant ears and Dumbo, keep in mind this is the same company that has a seafood restaurant located in an aquarium. :)

Melissa October 5, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Urinate with Rapunzel Experience

You mean The Princess and the Pee?

Erika October 5, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Any chance you know when the Mine train thing will open….crossong fingers for july as we will go in Aug!
Thanks as usual J!

Steph October 5, 2012 at 9:56 pm

I don’t know what it is about the pictures of pastry cases but I need a Cheshire Cat candy apple right about now.

siskaren October 7, 2012 at 8:02 am

@Erika – the Mine Train isn’t scheduled to open until 2014.

ajaynejr October 8, 2012 at 9:48 am

(fastpasses pictured above)
It appears to me that on that day you could pull a Dumbo fastpass almost immediately before or after pulling a fastpass for something else but the Barnstormer fastpass has the normal delay before another fastpass can be pulled. Had the Dumbo fastpass been pulled first it would show less than 5 minutes later as the time for next fastpass.
