Busy, even if it doesn’t look like it. I updated the August 2012 Crowd Calendar. It’s basically just the updated schedule with some additional tips mixed in. The Cliff Notes(?) version:
1. The Land Pavilion and Character Spot should continue to stay open through 10pm. That means you can get in line for Character Spot, Circle of Life, Living with the Land, or Soarin’ up through 10pm. The best time to get in line for Soarin’ is 8:35pm – 9:15pm or 9:55pm. A lot of people with FASTPASSes return after IllumiNations, causing standby waits to be longer from about 9:20pm – 10pm. Because FASTPASS users have the priority, you want to arrive closer to the 8:30pm – 8:45pm timeframe as you’ll have very few people returning with FASTPASSes and fewer people in the standby line because everyone is up in World Showcase watching IllumiNations. Circle of Life is so easy to see in the afternoon that you probably don’t want to take the time to see it after 9pm. Living with the Land is a lot of fun in the dark and there’s virtually nobody in line. Really, the greenhouse portion is a completely different experience and there aren’t a lot of opportunities to ride it in the dark because it would ordinarily stop operating at 7pm. Character Spot also sees much shorter lines. Ideally, I’d do:
- 8:40pm – Ride Soarin’
- 9:15pm – Ride Living with the Land
- 9:40pm – Visit Character Spot
You could also collect FASTPASSes for Soarin’ to use during the 9pm – 10pm hour. Those are usually available around 1:30pm. Obviously this requires skipping IllumiNations. If you’re planning to see IllumiNations, you’re probably only going to have time to do two things. I’d hit either Character Spot or Living with the Land right after IllumiNations and then get in line for Soarin’ after. Soarin’ is going to take at least 25 minutes, no matter what the posted wait says, so you risk missing out on one of the other rides if you get in line for it first.
2. Through August 25, Disney added a second Fantasmic at either 10pm or 10:30pm, depending on date. The second Fantasmic is (virtually) always less crowded than the first. That’s particularly true in the summer, when the second Fantasmic is much later. I recommend the Fantasmic Dining Package for the earlier show or waiting to see the second show. There are also several 11pm Main Street Electrical Parades at Magic Kingdom added. As usual, this Parade is significantly less crowded than the 9pm Parade because so many families leave after Wishes. For the shortest wait and easiest experience, see the 11pm show in Frontierland or Liberty Square. You may also be able to get good viewing spots on Main Street around 10:30pm after Wishes.
3. I added in a note on Animal Kingdom about Kali River Rapids. Due to its low capacity and increased popularity in warm temperatures, Kali tends to have longer waits than Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, or any other attraction. Due to that, I recommend riding before 10:30am, after 6pm, or with FASTPASSes collected by noon. FASTPASS return times will likely be further out than Everest or Safaris. You’re probably going to get soaked on Kali and with the Florida humidity, it isn’t necessarily one of the good varieties of wet.
4. Dumbo and Rapunzel are much lower priorities now that both offer FASTPASS and their respective capacities have doubled. I recommend relying on FASTPASS for the Princesses. Their location is somewhat inconvenient since they meet just inside the entrance. Because you can FASTPASS them and you can’t FASTPASS the other major characters, I don’t think it’s worth the time to meet the three Town Square princesses first thing in the morning. Rapunzel is only guaranteed to meet through 4pm, so I would plan to collect FASTPASSes around 12pm. That will give you enough time to hit the major attractions and the FASTPASS return time will be convenient. I don’t think that I would collect FASTPASSes for them first thing with a return time of 9:40am – 10:40am. That’s going to be a pretty long walk from Fantasyland or Frontierland. If you’re not planning to do the Mountains, then it would be viable to collect FASTPASSes first thing, but it isn’t necessary.
Dumbo is also less of a priority with the playground, FASTPASS, and second spinner. FASTPASS return times have been consistently 40 minutes out, making it a very easy afternoon or evening FASTPASS. If you’d like to experience the playground, I recommend visiting around 10:30am. This will give you enough time to hit the other attractions where wait times will build considerably before riding Dumbo. With the playground experience, you’re looking at about 20 minutes to do Dumbo, which is too long earlier in the morning.
I’ll be going over my “Ideal Magic Kingdom Morning” in more depth over the next week or so now that things have changed considerably. For a long time, it was easy to say, “Go straight to Rapunzel” or, “Go straight to Dumbo.” With that no longer being necessary, we have a lot more options.
For the Princesses, you’ll want to do:
- Princess Merida in Fairytale Garden immediately after rope drop. She begins meeting at 9:15am.
- Tinker Bell in Adventureland. If you have a member willing to wait outside at Ariel, do so. It’s easy for the group to join after Tinker Bell. Tinker Bell begins meeting at 9:15am.
- Ariel in Adventureland. She begins meeting at 10am.
Ariel is the one you don’t want to mess with because she takes a ton of breaks and her waiting area is boring and hot. If you arrive at Tinker Bell and it’s already past 9:30am, I’d ride Aladdin’s Magical Carpets a couple of times and then get in line for Ariel if you don’t have someone to wait in the Ariel line. While Tinker Bell’s wait will be longer after 10am, the area is one of the most pleasantly air-conditioned spots on property. Waiting 30 minutes there later in the afternoon isn’t necessarily the end of the world. Assuming you arrive early to Merida, you should be through at 9:25am. Expect it to be about 9:50am by the time you’re done with Tinker Bell. Then get in line for Ariel. The second best time to meet Tinker Bell is about two hours before close.
I just started working on the February 2013 Crowd Calendar image. Barring any major distractions, it should be ready later this evening. Then I’ll go back and do the January 2013 Daily Analysis and then the February 2013 Daily Analysis.

Psst … work on the Jan/Feb 2013 calendars instead of the 2012 versions.
Thanks! Especially for this: “For the Princesses, you’ll want to do:” I can’t wait to read your “Ideal MK Morning” post!
Yeaaa! So happy to hear there will be a new plan suggestion or options for MK morning!! So need that help…..leaving in 14 days!!!!! We will have 3 RD days at MK and used to have great TPs until the new FL…
As usual…you ROCK Josh…..this year when my kids start their obnoxiously loud ‘Thanks Mike” chants (as former TGM lovin family) when we are feeling ahead of the pack…i’ll make sure they change it to THANKS JOSH!!!! Or maybe THANKS CELEBRITY BLOGGER JOSH?
Sorry about the 2012 thing. It’s so weird talking about 2013 and even weirder talking about evening Extra Magic Hours that are two hours long.
As far as what to yell, “Your highness” works. Everyone will know what you’re talking about.
What return time do you think you’d get if you pick up a princess FP at noon? That’s what I was tentatively planning for our trip at the end of Aug. I’ll run to get FPs, then have lunch with the fam at Casey’s or Cosmic Ray’s or something, and see the princesses on our way out for our afternoon swim/nap break. Think that’d work? In case you haven’t been told already today, you rock!
LOL, Erika! Didn’t even see your comment before I posted mine
A Princess FASTPASS pulled around noon should result in a return in the vicinity of 1pm to 2pm. It could possibly be out a little further to 1:30pm – 2:30pm depending on how Disney is working the posted wait times.
They really need to have the FP machines in Fantasyland for the princesses. That would be SOOO much more convenient.
Please, please do that updated Ideal MK Morning in the next week, since we are leaving in about 2 weeks. Oh and my offer to push you around CBR in style still stands!
Your highness, I second the Ideal am at Magic Kingdom. We are leaving in two weeks too! My second wish…the Feb calendar so I can make my ADR list for my TA! Thanks. You rock!
Your Highness, do you expect to be making any changes to the Sept. 2012 crowd calendar? I and all your other loyal subjects will be waiting with bated breath!
Wow, two separate comments at the exact same time starting with “Your highness.” I like this. I don’t think there will be recommendation changes in September. We should see some extended hours at Magic Kingdom on Saturdays with potentially a second Main Street Electrical Parade. Expect a second Fantasmic to be added when it’s hosting evening Extra Magic Hours. Animal Kingdom may also see some later closes, particularly on Saturdays and Wednesdays. But nothing too major and generally speaking, the extended hours on days we weren’t planning to visit on anyway only makes the recommended Parks better.
I plan on following your Merida, Tink, Ariel strategy next month. I’ll let you know how it goes.
What do you think the crowds will be like during the week of April starting on the 22nd to the 28th of 2013? sorry for being off topic of the other posts, ive seen conflicting reports about that week and the crowd level, this will by my kids first time going and didnt really want a huge crowd
Thanks so much Josh!!
We leave in 9 short days, and I can’t wait!! This will be a huge help!
Your Highness, aka Celebrity Blogger…..
As far as the August 2012 updated calendar is concerned for EPCOT, will all of Future World be opened till 10:00pm or is it only The Land Pavilion and the Character Spot?? BTW, I love your blog and you actually make me laugh out loud..Thanks for that!
Thanks Josh! Will be there in 11 days. The beer offer in WS still stands if you’re around!
Are the town square meet and greet fastpasses on the fast pass system? It seems like I remebered reading that you could pull a fastpass for either Mickey or the princesses anytime. Is this still the case? Are there any other fast pass (at any of the parks) machines that are not online with the rest of the system?
@wareagle818
The Princesses are on the system, which is why Josh was saying that you’d have to choose between them and something else, but Mickey is a freebie and usually (always?) 40 minutes out.
Thanks so much, Your Highness. These tips do help, I have been beating my head on the keyboard trying to figure out what to do in what order at MK. I would have done it all wrong, lol. We have three days at Magic Kingdom and probably a MNSSHP evening in addition so we should fit everything in but every tip helps with so much changing since last fall.
I’m with Ericka, DH would always ask “Well what does Mike say we should do next?” Ill make sure he knows to phrase it “What does His Highness say” from here on out.
We’re wanting to know where the His Highness meet-and-greet will be taking place for the last week of September? Can’t find it anywhere – even on Kenny the Pirate…
I’d take the kids to His Highness meet-and-greet, that is, as long as it was taking place at a “most recommended” park and was at a time that didnt interfere with early morning touring.
Hmm…Kali after 10:30 pm?
Thanks so much for re-working an ideal MK morning with the changes. I’m curious about where you recommend to start now with FP if you are not interested in princesses.
great post very informative!!!
We leave in 26 days on our first trip and I will be using all your advice! Right on our first night there we will be doing your plans for The Lands after 8:30pm! I will let you know how it goes for sure! Also on one rope drop MK day we will pull a FP for princess then run to Merdia then to PP Flight if enough time before princess FP time. My hubby and son will be heading straight to Space Mountain first thing. Then meeting us for PP Flight. How does that plan sound? Thanks!!
josh… We arrive aug 25 – 30…..are the crowds still going to be much lower than the rest of the summer? I’m crossing my fingers!!!!!
Josh,
Can’t wait for your ideal MK plan either–I’ve been struggling with this as we have 2 RD MK mornings during the last week in August. I definitely would have been heading to Dumbo first as usual, but working it in a bit later using FP could be good–though not too much later because we like to head to Frontierland after Fantasyland.
Anyway, this is my first reply on here and I’ve been a loyal celebrity blogger follower for almost a year and a half now!
I also saw a poster the other night that I thought you’d appreciate (not that you’ve got a reputation, of course). It read, “Rehab is for quitters.” Thought it was right up your alley.
