A few odds and ends attached to the Tutto Italia/Tutto Gusto launch from earlier in the week.

Walt Disney Company stock is moving above $44 again as we look towards the second quarter earnings report next Tuesday.  This should be an interesting one with the 200 million dollar loss on John Carter and a lot of “stuff” coming online this quarter and next.  The Fantasy debuted last month and Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure opens next month.  Not to mention The Avengers, New Fantasyland, Grand Floridian DVC, and other major projects.  With international attendance breaking records and domestic/European attendance down, it will be interesting to see if we hear anything specific in regards to resort occupancy and overall theme park attendance.

Work continues on gutting Test Track.

It’s a Tuesday, which ordinarily means Epcot is hosting a morning Extra Magic Hour.  It’s 8:28am and Disney resort guests are invited to use the turnstiles down here on the far left.

A small crowd has formed here to the right of the turnstiles that are currently letting in resort guests.

Thanks for making April the most visited month for this website yet!  320,000+ visitors and over 10 million files served.  June 2011 saw 133,000 visitors and 3.2 million files served, so things are seemingly “improving” in that regard.  I appreciate all of you that take the time to post comments.

Rewinding a few days to this past Sunday at Hollywood Studios, April the 29th.

The bus stop to the Transportation and Ticket Center from Hollywood Studios has moved to the Charter Bus Lot, which is away from the bus stops for most of the resorts.  You’ll also find the direct buses to Epcot and Animal Kingdom over here.  There is no direct bus to the Magic Kingdom’s main entrance from the theme parks.  Currently, you have to connect at the Transportation/Ticket Center.  That is expected to change, possibly as early as the end of this month.

Just as a reminder, here are your transportation options:

From Animal Kingdom:

  • Direct bus to the main entrance of Epcot.
  • Direct bus to the main entrance of Hollywood Studios.
  • Bus to the Transportation and Ticket Center where you would take the monorail or boat to Magic Kingdom.

From Epcot:

  • Direct bus to main entrance of Animal Kingdom.
  • Direct bus to main entrance of Hollywood Studios.
  • Boat service or walk to main entrance of Hollywood Studios.
  • Monorail to Transportation and Ticket Center where you would take the monorail or boat to Magic Kingdom.

From Hollywood Studios:

  • Direct bus to main entrance of Animal Kingdom.
  • Direct bus to main entrance of Epcot.
  • Boat service or walk to International Gateway entrance at Epcot.
  • Bus to the Transportation and Ticket Center where you would take the monorail or boat to Magic Kingdom.

From Magic Kingdom:

  • Monorail to Transportation and Ticket Center where you would get a bus to the main entrance of Animal Kingdom.
  • Monorail to Transportation and Ticket Center where you would transfer to the Epcot Monorail.
  • Monorail to Transportation and Ticket Center where you would get a bus to the main entrance of Hollywood Studios.

The good thing about the Transportation and Ticket Center is that buses come much more frequently than the theme parks. It’s rare that you’ll even have to wait ten minutes and it’s usually closer to five.

Note that there is currently nothing for Stop 11.  We can expect it will be used for the Art of Animation Resort when it opens at the end of the month.

Edit: Tutto Italia accepts the Disney Dining Plan/Tables in Wonderland.  Tutto Gusto accepts Tables in Wonderland, but not the Disney Dining Plan.

A slew of news to get us started. Pricing and dates for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party are official. My review of last year’s Party. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party pricing and dates are also official. My review of last year’s Party. $74.50/adult (with tax) for Halloween night is pretty ugly. Otherwise, it looks like tickets went up about $2/person over last year’s prices, which is the customary increase.

Princess Merida began practicing Meet and Greets Tuesday in Epcot as pictured here.  She’s beautiful and looks to be a lot of fun.

A Legend of Jack Sparrow attraction is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios this fall. In addition, a new RFID version of “FASTPASS” began testing today (yesterday now). I’ll check it out in person later this week. It’s Tough To Be A Bug reopened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Monday after a “branch” fell from the Tree of Life early last week. The Discovery Island trails remain closed and nets surround the area. Feels safe? The Magic Kingdom Express and Resort Monorails resumed normal service today (Tuesday) after closing between 11:30am and 6pm over the last few days.

But my priorities lie with the new Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar and the reopening of the Tutto Italia restaurant in the Italy Pavilion. Go figure.

Both locations are easy enough to find. Just head to the back of the Italy Pavilion and look to your left. Tutto Gusto’s main entrance is to the right of Tutto Italia, but there’s also an entrance from within Tutto Italia’s waiting area.

Via Napoli in the back of the Pavilion.

Thew newly reopened Wine Cellar. Very inviting?

Well that’s a title if I’ve ever seen one.

Two pieces of news right off the bat.  Rapunzel began greeting guests at 9am today.  You may remember that she had been appearing first at 9:20am.  The 9am meet time means you won’t have to stand in line for 20 minutes right off the bat should you choose to meet her first thing in the morning (as you should).  In turn, that should allow for a shorter wait at Tinker Bell, who first appears at 9:15am.  It’s actually really good news.  The 20 minute wait in the morning is (was) obnoxious.  And more on the FASTPASS/”xPass” test beginning May 1st here.  Should you be selected and not mind some creepy bro following you around, I would appreciate it if you would let me!

Headed out to Epcot on Saturday April 28th.  It’s 1:07pm.  This is another example of where this website and TouringPlans.com had completely different “crowd predictions.”  easyWDW has Epcot as its least recommended Park while TouringPlans.com has Epcot as its only recommended Park with a “per park crowd level” of 3.5.  We have evening Extra Magic Hours attached to attract Disney resort guests and the Dance World Championships going on in the World Showcase.  Upon arrival, both sides of the extended queue are full at Spaceship Earth, which means you’re looking at a 30 minute wait for an attraction that’s ordinarily a walk-on given the average overall crowd level and time of day.  Living with the Land is offering FASTPASS and Soarin’s wait time is a cool 100 minutes.  The overall crowd level is accurate.  We’ll be taking a look at Hollywood Studios today (Sunday) where Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster had a 20 minute standby wait at 2pm and Toy Story Mania was still distributing FASTPASSes at 2:15pm.

This is about as many people as I’ve ever seen taking in a Jammitors performance.

They’re a fun group that’s largely ignored given “normal” circumstances.   But with Test Track closed and Mission: Space sitting at a 50 minute wait, people have some time on their hands.

Note: I didn’t really have time to edit this before running out, so it may be riddled with even more typographical errors than usual.  If you would like to experience this post in the way it was intended to be written, you may want to delay reading it until this evening or cancel it altogether.

A bit of news coming out of this weekend’s “media” event.  SplitsvilleArt of Animation ResortTest TrackStar Wars Weekends MerchOpening Dates for New Fantasyland.  The million dollar question is when most of New Fantasyland will reopen.  There is no definitive date, which is why we’re only hearing the vague “in time for the holiday season.”  I’m not going to go on the record just because whatever I tell you would end up being wrong.  Not because it isn’t accurate today, but it may very well not be accurate tomorrow.  Such is the case with construction of this magnitude.  I will tell you that there is a major push to get both Test Track and New Fantasyland open by November 12th.  Both would open on the same weekend and we would see a “media” event very similar to the one from the past few days.

Since this website can’t compete with the media elite’s exclusive access to the Art of Animation Resort, I decided to spend Saturday walking around Port Orleans French Quarter and Riverside.  Unfortunately, it turned out there was actually a “media” event at the Riverside.  Princess Tiana’s Tea Party.  I will take this opportunity to remind you that this website can absolutely be bought off.  For $20, I’m willing to say or do just about anything.

We’ll take a look at those resorts intermittently over the next few days.  I want to spend most of the time before the next crowd calendar update refreshing past content.

Continuing from Part 1.  It’s 10:59am.

Mad Tea Party is still virtually a walk-on.  You might be waiting for one spin before it’s your turn.

Construction continues on the Winnie the Pooh Meet and Greet next to his attraction.

Heading out to Magic Kingdom bright and early this past Wednesday.  An easyWDW “Most Recommended Park” and a TouringPlans.com “Neutral Park.”  Very diplomatic of them.  I hope it isn’t busy (wink)!

I arrived at the Transportation and Ticket Center at about 8:10pm.  The Express Monorail doesn’t come online until 30 minutes before regular open, which is 8:30am in most instances.  That means our options are the Resort Monorail or the Ferry Boat.  When the Express Monorail is operating, it’s virtually always the quickest means of transportation, even if it’s backed up much further than the Resort Monorail.  There are usually three Express Monorails for every Resort Monorail and the trip on the Express is about three minutes, compared to around 15 minutes on the Resort.  The Resort would stop at the Polynesian and Grand Floridian Resorts before arriving at Magic Kingdom.  I checked to see if the Ferry Boat was docked and waiting for guests to board.  It was, so I boarded.  If the boat wasn’t in sight, I would have hopped on the Resort Monorail.

There were 11 other people on board.

As I’ve mentioned before, the Ferry is ordinarily my favorite means of transportation.  Unlike the Monorail, where you’re stuck with the screaming child sitting next to you, you can easily move around the boat should the decibel level become intolerable.  It’s also a scenic ride past the Grand Floridian on the left.

Clerical

by josh on April 26, 2012

I completed the daily analysis for the November 2012 Disney World crowd calendar and updated the crowd calendar image.

Walt Disney Company is hosting a VIP blogger event over the next few days.  Bloggers are holed up for the weekend at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and are currently enjoying a presentation hosted by Samantha Brown.  We should see significant updates to the Art of Animation Resort and the status of the New Fantasyland construction.  Hopefully that will include a timeline for New Fantasyland openings like the new Little Mermaid dark ride, Casey Jr. Splash Zone, Be Our Guest Restaurant, etc.  If we don’t get an update, I’ll share the dates I’ve seen.  People continue asking, “When will (blank) open?”  The answer is that there is nothing definitive.

More information on the change from Kim Possible to Phineas and Ferb for the World Showcase Adventure at Epcot here.

The Magic, The Memories, and You  show at Magic Kingdom will see a summer section similar to the ones we saw for Christmas and Valentine’s Day.  Concept art.  This is a really neat show that shouldn’t be missed.

Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano has a new menu and chef.  Details here.  I’ll take a picture of the menu and try that seafood cioppino the next time I’m at the Studios.

The Affection Section at Rafiki’s Planett Watch will be closed for refurbishment from April 30 – June 9, reopening on June 10th.

It’s Tough To Be A Bug and the Discovery Island trails continue to be closed after a small piece fell off the Tree earlier in the week.  No one was hurt and there isn’t a date for when it will reopen.  I would be surprised if isn’t reopened by Sunday.

According to DisneyWorld.com, Test Track is closed for refurbishment through November 30th.  Unfortunately when a refurbishment is listed as going through the end of the month, it’s more likely that it will be extended even further.

Quick Magic Kingdom Character Update

Posted a quick Magic Kingdom character timing update over in the forums.  I’ll have a more thoughtful post in the next day or two, but there have been a lot of questions about wait times and plans of attack with the Rapunzel move.

Also, everyone was making fun of the fake ghosts I captured at the BoardWalk Inn.  So I went to Haunted Mansion and took a picture of some real ones.

A continuation of the Vision House post and the Test Track All Stars Videos.

Starbucks is coming to Walt Disney World.  There, I mentioned it.

Don’t worry.  I am still diligently researching beers that may or may not be offered during the Food and Wine Festival or at any time at any location on Disney World property.  The goal is to have tried one of everything possible so that I won’t have to drink like 30 when the Food/Wine menus come out in September.  That would be terrible(y awesome)!

Here’s a look at the Epcot Times Guides from last week and this week.  You may recall that we’ve been taking a pretty close look at how Disney is treating the Land Pavilion from 9pm to 10pm.  Originally, Disney explicitly stated that Living with the Land and The Circle of Life would operate from 9am – 9pm.  That’s an extension from the usual 9am – 7pm hours.  This week, they don’t mention either attraction as having special hours nor do they note that the Land Pavilion will operate until 10pm.  It still is, along with the Character Spot.

Arriving at 12:38:36pm, the line for Guest Relations is just a little bit out the door with full staffing inside.

You may remember my harping on Disney for putting Test Track’s wait time as “RENEWAL” and stating that it should simply read “CLOSED.”  Apparently they agree.  If you knew Test Track was closed, “RENEWAL” might might sense.  But if I told you that your local mall was being “renewed,” your next question would be whether it was open, right?  Or one of your top five questions or something.

November 2012 Disney World Crowd Calendar

by josh on April 23, 2012

4/26/12 Update: Crowd Calendar analysis updated for November 15 – 30 and Crowd Calendar image updated with minor changes.

4/23/12 Update: Updated the Crowd Calendar image and added daily analysis for November 1 – 15.  The rest of the month should follow in about two days.  November is a tricky month with the Extra Magic Hours switch in the middle of the month, the random days at Hollywood Studios that don’t feature Fantasmic, the changing Mickey’s Party schedule, the busy Thanksgiving week in the middle, etc.

This is the Free November 2012 Disney World Crowd Calendar that shows the Recommended Parks to Visit, Overall Crowd Level Estimation, Cost, Historic High/Low Temperature, Historic Chance of Precipitation, Extra Magic Hours Schedule, Fantasmic Show Times, Holidays, and Special Events.

Make sure you first read my month-by-month overview of visiting Disney World, located here. The overview will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of cost, crowds, weather, and special events on a broader scale. Once you figure out when you would like to visit, you can move on to this more detailed look.

Here’s a quick explanation of how to read the calendar and what the numbers mean. It may seem like it’s a little long, but you’ll only need to read the explanation once.

  • The first line in each box is the date.
  • The second line shows the cost to book a room at a Disney-owned resort. $ = Value Season, $$ = Regular Season, $$$ = Summer Season, $$$$ = Peak Season, and $$$$$ = Holiday Season. Occasionally there will be a + or – after the $$$ to show that the cost is slightly higher or lower than usual, but not by enough to raise it another $ notch.
  • The third line is the average high and low temperature and the chance of precipitation. All data is based on the last 15 years. I wouldn’t read too much into the precipitation percentages for each day because just one or two additional days of rain in the last 15 years can raise the percentage substantially. I included it so you can look at the precipitation trends throughout the month(s) and take it into consideration when deciding when to book your vacation. For a broader overview of the month, read the month-by-month overview I linked to above.
  • The fourth line is an estimation of the overall crowd level. A “5″ refers to average crowds. Numbers above 5 refer to a larger than average overall crowd level and numbers below 5 refer to lower than average overall crowds. A day with an overall crowd level of “1″ means that the crowds are expected to be the absolute lowest of the year and a “10″ means crowds are expected to be at their largest of the year. In other words, the overall crowd level estimation will give you an idea of how many people are in the entire Disney World complex, including the four major theme parks, water parks, Downtown Disney, golf courses, resorts, etc. Individual theme parks can have smaller or larger crowds than the overall estimation, which is where the theme park recommendations come in.
  • The fifth line shows the theme parks I recommend visiting in green and the theme parks I recommend avoiding in red. There is also a | sign that splits up the recommended and not recommended Parks for the color blind or those printing in black and white (the Parks to the left of the | sign are recommended). I use the usual abbreviations for the Parks; AK is the Animal Kingdom, EP is Epcot, HS is Hollywood Studios, and MK is the Magic Kingdom. In addition to the colors, the Park on the far left is the most recommended Park to visit that day. The Park second to the left is the second most recommended and so on. For example, if the line reads AK EP | HS MK then the Animal Kingdom is the most recommended and Epcot is the second most recommended. On the other side of the | sign, Hollywood Studios is not recommended and the Magic Kingdom is expressly not recommended even more. If possible, I would strongly recommend you visit the Park that is most recommended each day. Please read below the calendar for an overview of how I’ve selected the recommended Parks and also a day-by-day explanation.
  • The sixth line lists which Parks have Extra Magic Hours and at what time they start. Morning Extra Magic Hour lasts one hour and usually starts at 8am. Evening Extra Magic Hours last three hours from the start time. For example, if you see AK:8am EP:9pm, that means the Animal Kingdom has a morning Extra Magic Hour from 8am-9am and Epcot has evening Extra Magic Hours from 9pm-12am.
  • The seventh line lists the Fantasmic show times at the Hollywood Studios.
  • The eighth line lists the start time of Main Street Electrical Parade (MSEP:) and Wishes Fireworks at Magic Kingdom(W:). For example, if you see, MSEP: 9pm & 11pm W: 10pm, it would mean that Main Street Electrical Parade begins at 9pm and 11pm and Wishes begins at 10pm.
  • The Calendar is also available in an easy to view and print PDF file, Here.

Thursday November 1

Animal Kingdom: 9am – 5pm (Recommended)

Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade: 3:45pm

Epcot: 9am – 9pm (Highly Recommended)

Illuminations: 9pm

Hollywood Studios: 9am – 8pm (Most Recommended)

Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun Parade: 3pm

Fantasmic: 7:30pm

Magic Kingdom: 9am – 9pm (Not Recommended)

Morning Extra Magic Hour: 8am – 9am

Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade: 3pm, Main Street Electrical Parade: 8pm, Wishes Fireworks: 9pm

Animal Kingdom is recommended.  Disney resort guests are more likely to visit tomorrow for the morning Extra Magic Hour.  Today, we have morning Extra Magic Hour/Main Street Electrical Parade/longer hours of operation attracting crowds toward the Magic Kingdom.  As always, you’ll find the most success if you arrive prior to Park opening and head straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest.  If you’re not riding the thrill rides (Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, Primeval Whirl), you’ll want to attend the first showing of Festival of the Lion King and/or Finding Nemo because those shows will be popular in the afternoon.  Also consider heading over to Camp Minnie-Mickey right before the characters appear in the morning to find the shortest lines.  Collect FASTPASSes for attractions you either want to ride again or couldn’t make it to in the morning and you should be able to do just about everything the Animal Kingdom has to offer.  After completing your itinerary, you may want to Park Hop to Magic Kingdom for Wishes and Main Street Electrical Parade, Hollywood Studios for Fantasmic, or Epcot for dinner and IllumiNations.  Keep in mind that crowds disperse shortly after the 3:45pm Parade.  Stay through close if there’s more that you want to accomplish because wait times will only decrease from 4:15pm onward.  Without Park Hopper, consider transferring to the Animal Kingdom Lodge for dinner at one of its excellent restaurants.  There’s also a public observatory where you can gaze out at the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s private savannas and enjoy the same view many guests are paying a premium to have right outside their balconies.  A trip to Downtown Disney or the BoardWalk for dinner and shopping also makes a lot of sense.

Epcot is highly recommended and far and away your best choice if you have other plans for Hollywood Studios.  We’re going into another busy weekend, thanks to the guaranteed higher crowds for the International Food and Wine Festival.  Fantasmic and Magic Kingdom’s morning Extra Magic Hour will also help pull people away today.  Plus, yesterday’s evening Extra Magic Hours will have been wildly popular with Disney resort guests and they won’t be looking to return today, especially in the morning.  All in all, today and Monday are your best days of the week at Epcot. Take full advantage by arriving as early in the morning as possible and head straight for the headlining attractions.  See the touring plans section for more tips.

Hollywood Studios is our most recommended Park.  While it’s later in the week, Magic Kingdom will be a much bigger draw with morning Extra Magic Hour and Main Street Electrical Parade drawing off-site and on-site visitors alike. Saturday’s morning Extra Magic Hour will be more popular with Disney resort guests, particularly with the likelihood that Disney will extend the close and add a second Fantasmic.  We’re also coming off two days that will be busier due to the lack of evening entertainment at Magic Kingdom causing people to visit other theme parks.  However, the Studios’ decent hours of operation and the addition of Fantasmic means it won’t be far and away less crowded than other recommended days earlier in the week.  Touring efficiently is more important than “picking the right day” when Fantasmic is scheduled, like it is today.  That means arriving prior to Park opening and taking care of Toy Story Mania, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, and Star Tours first thing in the morning or with FASTPASS throughout the day.  FASTPASSes for Toy Story will likely be gone by noon, so make sure it’s your top priority.  Standby waits ordinarily hit 60+ minutes due to its popularity and limited capacity.  Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster also sees decent afternoon waits, likely in the 30-50 minute range, with FASTPASSes that run out in the late afternoon.  Plan to head there second or collect FASTPASSes for it as soon after Toy Story Midway Mania as possible.  You may also want to prioritize the Toy Story, Phineas and Ferb, or Sorcerer Mickey characters.  In addition, characters appear at Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat in the early morning that won’t appear during any other part of the day.  Usually, Minnie, Pluto, Chip, Dale, Donald, Daisy, Piglet, and Tigger appear, but no specific characters are guaranteed.  Overall, you can do well at the Studios if you arrive early and tour efficiently, but afternoon crowds will be decent.  Arrive at 10:30am with everyone else and you’re looking at long lines at Toy Story Mania and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.  You can still enjoy the various shows, but it’s going to be more difficult to experience those two attractions.  Thankfully, Tower of Terror and Star Tours see shorter waits and more FASTPASS availability.  Still, Tower of Terror will hit 30 minutes in the afternoon and Star Tours should see 25 minute waits.  Plan to use FASTPASS if you don’t get in line before 10:30am.

The morning Extra Magic Hour at Magic Kingdom will lure a lot of Disney resort guests and we also have the first Main Street Electrical Parade since Monday.  Combined, this will make Magic Kingdom significantly busier than either of the last two days or tomorrow.  You can have success provided you take advantage of the morning Extra Magic Hour by arriving no later than 7:40am and heading straight to Fantasyland or other open attractions.  Move on to the headlining Mountain rides or character meet and greets when they open and you’ll be in excellent shape.  However, you will find that crowds are heavier than recommended days in the afternoon.  You’ll probably want to take a break from 1pm to 5pm or so and return in the evening to ride some major attractions with FASTPASS, have dinner, see some high capacity attractions, and enjoy the evening spectaculars.  Keep in mind that you would be much better off visiting on a recommended day if you aren’t Extra Magic Hours eligible or won’t arrive until 10am or later because it will be busier than recommended days from 11am onward.  Tonight is your best opportunity this week to see Main Street Electrical Parade, but the Magic Kingdom will still be busy.  If you are planning to see the Parade, I recommend scouting out a spot along the Parade route in Frontierland or Liberty Square.  Both locations are significantly less crowded than Main Street and offer a view that is just as good.  To enjoy the Electrical Parade with the least possible hassle, plan to visit a recommended Park in the morning, take an afternoon break, and then visit Magic Kingdom in the evening for dinner and the nighttime spectaculars.
