Thanks for the update. I may be in WDW that second week of March, so it will be nice to see 1am closings at MK every night – it’ll be like Christmas week closing times at MK. Days will be very busy, but with rope drop and FP+ it should be manageable.

Why the hours bumps at the end of Feb. / early March? I understand the increases later into March (spring break) but my understanding was that late Feb. / 1st week of March were still relatively quiet. Is something going on to spur this change?

@ArthurKing1220: Perhaps that’s when the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is going to open?

Len February 8, 2014 at 5:01 am

@ArthuerKing1220: It’s Mardis Gras weekend. Josh downplays the impact in his crowd calender but maybe Disney is seeing high bookings that weekend.

Carrie February 8, 2014 at 5:12 am

I don’t think the extended hours are due to Mardis Gras. Mardis Gras is on the 4th. I think the hours are just due to overall high crowds. We went the same week last year and the crowds were definitely summer like- comparable to many weeks when we’ve gone in the summer. Josh has March 9th-15th listed as an “8″. That’s exactly right compared to last year. Touring plans has that week listed as mostly 6s with a 5 and 7 thrown in. No way are crowds going to be that low for those kinds of extended hours.

Hi Carrie,
We are talking about Feb. 28, which Josh has as a 4, and March 1, which Josh has as a 6. Unclear why there would be larger crowds justifying 1 am closings that weekend, although people coming in from Louisiana which as the week off for Mardis Gras could be swelling the bookings that weekend. Spring break crowds start arriving March 7 so you are right, those hours are not surprising.

flower & garden show @ epcot starts march 7 perhaps ……………

So… I have my Fantasmic! package booked for May 1st and planned on DHS this day. Is it now going to be crazy busy with the anniversary and Fireworks?

ArthurKing1220 February 8, 2014 at 7:53 am

Yeah to be clear I completely understand that crowds skyrocket beginning second week of March (i.e., the time period you’re referring to Carrie). But the way the late Feb. / very early March period has been talked about, at least historically, was that it was still relatively quiet — really the last relatively quiet period before the spring break craziness starts. To me that was a good thing! :) I’m now just worried that something is showing up in Dismey’s systems to tell them that that period is going to involve large crowds (hence the hours extensions — 1 am in late February, really?). My understanding was that Mardi Gras was such a local event — really, isolated to Louisiana — that it wouldn’t affect crowds THAT much. But maybe I was wrong.

I’m wondering if they will eventually extend the MK hours the week before Easter? Currently closes at 12 and is traditionally a pretty busy time.

Alicia February 8, 2014 at 2:39 pm

No s in mardi. It’s Mardi Gras.

Sweetpea0830 February 8, 2014 at 3:28 pm

We check in on March 15. Hoping that week isn’t too too bad. I guess not having any extensions posted that week is a good thing??

andrea February 9, 2014 at 10:11 am

We have been to WDW over Mardi Gras and there is DEFINITELY an uptick in crowds. One trip we were checking into Pop over Mardi Gras and the entire line was people from LA. All wearing Saints gear (it was the year that NO won the Superbowl – 2010??). They were having a GREAT time!

The parks were the same – full of people in Saints/Lousiana gear. And definitely more busy than any other February time I had been.

Dawn H February 9, 2014 at 5:22 pm

since HS was already not recommended on that day I have alternate plans for May 1, but Im wondering is there a place that we can see the fireworks from outside the park? does this change the rating? make it worse?.. is it worth extra trouble to see ..do you think?

JD February 9, 2014 at 7:27 pm

If it was crazy busy at Mardi Gras during 2010, it may also have to do with President’s day/week. Those two coincided that week…same thing in 2012. While Mardi Gras brings lots of Louisiana guests…pair that with President’s week and it’s bound to be crowded. Since this year Mardi Gras is “by itself” maybe it won’t be as bad as 2010/2012. One can wish!

Heather February 10, 2014 at 7:52 am

I’m from Alabama and going during Mardi Gras. I don’t know why it bothers me when people refer to Mardi Gras as only a Louisiana thing…… Anyways, It seems like almost everyone I know (including me) will be at Disney world that week since schools are closed either the whole week or part of the week. I’m hoping that it will not be crazy busy since the hours are being extended, but I do hope that the Mine train opens!!

Gregg February 10, 2014 at 7:26 pm

I was searching hotel rooms for last week in Feb into the first week in March because Josh has that period as mostly 4s. Almost everything is fully booked except for the All Stars. Trying to figure out week to visit in 2015 so checking equivalent time period this year. On a positive note MG is much earlier next year.

LZ February 13, 2014 at 11:38 am

We are going March 10-13th Anyone know if the new Snow White ride will be open at that time? Easter is in April this year. Why is March going to be so crazy busy?:(
