    Paper ^&*($#! Straws!!

    ...

Animal Kingdom PARK (we ate at Flame Tree), and inside AKL (club lounge..mara...boma..) all had paper straws. They were some of the most annoying things. We were so frustrated because CM's told us a tip that if you keep them inside your drink when you're NOT drinking from it, the straw tends to dissolve and disintegrate. Sure enough, it got all soggy and gross.

I understand it's environmentally safe and friendly and stuff, but it was a little much...especially when there were clear plastic cups right beside them.

Sorry...just had to get that off my chest.

It's not the "environmentally safe" issue, it's due to animals choking on plastic straws. Not an issue with cups. Did you notice the lack of balloons at AK and AKL too? Also banned. But yes, soggy paper straws suck.

Most zoos and aquariums don't even offer straws or lids...they are a choking hazard to animals.

    Edited--beat me to it!

Ohhh yeah..that's what the CM's told us..lol sorry. Either way they're annoying....but yeah I know about the balloons at AKL. It makes sense for them to be banned at AK too, I just didn't really think about it I guess..

I hate paper straws too. I remember a million years ago when Hard Rock used them in all of their restaurants. I think I went through 10 per meal.

I really dislike the feel of the paper straws in my mouth so I don't use them. I am glad that they're at least an option though because my 11yo much prefers using a straw. They only appeared at AK maybe a year ago so I see this as better than the previous option of no straws at all.

They are annoying, but it's what they used at the soda counters in the 1950's right? It's retro!!!
    Thanks,

    I like the paper straws...
If I remember correctly, back in 1976 CP had paper straws, and I thought that was the neatest thing. They always remind me of that trip.

p.s. it was either at CP, or one of the many cafeteria style restaurants we stopped at on the drive from MA to FL.

The idea of paper straws takes me back to elementary school! I would pick up multiple straws to make it through one carton of milk. Or orange "drink". And need every single one of them.

Yup, I remember that. Those were the days when I'd pack my straw in my suitcase (really!) The paper straws are an improvement over nothing, IMO. I think it's Disney's effort to placate the guests while still being considerate to the animals. Personally, I appreciate their effort.

I'd be happier with a spout like lid similar to the type they have on coffee cups.

We were at our local zoo today and every drink that wasn't in a bottle came in a souvenir cup with a thick plastic bendy straw. It would be more expensive but they could just build it into the cost. I never noticed the fact that they don't have straws until today, now I know why.
