Yak & Yeti seems to get the most polarized reviews...on the DISBoards, where I formerly lurked around before finding this site, I read reviews that began "I almost Yakked my Yeti" and "Yuk & Yeti" as often as "It's the only place we'll eat in AK! Amazzzzing" along with pictures of the fried green beans appetizer and wanton dessert. I am pleased to report that you can add me to the latter group.
We arrived on time for our ADR and were seated immediately. Our baby had fallen asleep in our rather massive stroller, and the staff was so accommodating to find us a table out of the way where we could sit with him in the stroller.
The server handed us the menus as I told her we were on the DDP. After inspecting the card, she explained that we could have any entree, including one of the larger salads from the salad menu. She also ventured vaguely to the drink card and said something like "You can have pretty much anything that is refillable". So after some deliberation, we were set and flagged her down to place our order.
DH ordered one of the juice drinks, something like a cherry sparkling limeade, if memory serves, which was listed just above the starard soda list on the menu. "Oh no," the server said, "that's not on the DDP. You can have soda or one of the iced teas." DH was a good sport about it and just got a coke. I was a tad displeased since she could have just said that the first time. I chose an unsweeted mango iced tea. Then we chose our entrees. Then I was pretty surprised when she wanted to take our dessert order right away with the entrees. This was not the only restaurant where this happened and it always stuck me as odd. I like to choose my dessert after tasting the rest of my meal, to know if I want something heavy or light. I guess this ordering style comes with being on the DDP? Anyway, I told her we would wait and she warned us that desserts would take a while, so we had better choose soon. Oooooh Kaaay....
I ordered the Duck with Anandapur glaze. I was so glad I did. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender. The glaze was flavorful. The dipping sauce had an orange kick. It was yummy, but really the duck didn't need it. I really enjoyed this dish and it was one of the best I had on the whole trip.
The rice was just plain white rice, nothing special, but well prepared. I didn't eat all of it. The veggies were extremely flavorful with a powerful ginger taste. It was a mix of peppers, onions, carrots, pea pods, mushrooms, and some bok choy too if memory serves. If I wanted to find a complaint about this dish, it would be that there were more peppers and onions than anything else. I think I only had 2 pea pods? I would have loved more. But I'm sure it was just the random scoop I got.
DH ordered the Shaoxing Steak and Shrimp. He also enjoyed this very much! The steak had a very flavorful marinade. We both had a little and agreed it was super! The shrimp tempura was well done. His veggies did not have a ginger taste like mine. The dipping sauce here is the same as the one as the famous wok-friend green beans.
I also got a side of the green beans. I just had to try them. And they are every bit as good as I had heard they were! The green beans are nice and soft inside but the outside is crunchy. The sauce is tangy and sweet. Both the 4yo and the baby ate these! They come as a smaller portion for a smaller price ($4.99 or $5.99, I think) when ordered as a side. It was the perfect amount for us. (There were more than were shown here--about 30% more at least. Everyone dug in before I got a picture!)
DS4 chose the sweet & sour chicken kids meal. There were a bunch of side choices and we could choose two. Since the baby had woken up, our server OK'd getting 2 sides of applesauce so each kid could enjoy one. We also had plenty of extra rice to share from our adult entrees. That combined with the green beans made for a somewhat rounded meal. The chicken itself did not appear to be that special, but the boys liked it just fine and that was all that mattered.
At this point I will mention that the service improved a lot as the meal went on. The server was very attentive and cheerful. At least 2 manager types stopped by to ask if we were enjoying our meal, and could they get us anything? I didn't mention the drink or dessert issues to any of them. The service as a whole was fine so there was no need to risk getting the girl in trouble.
We ordered our desserts before we finished our entrees at the urging of the server. I think she just didn't want us to be stuck in the meal for a long time. We both chose the pineapple cream cheese wanton skewers.
Yummo! I loved these. I'm so glad Yak & Yeti is in FL and I am not. I would gain 20 pounds in a year eating these things. Really good. The vanilla ice cream was really good, too, but I didn't even think it was necessary, especially with the honey vanilla sauce that was already in place. DH liked to eat all of the components together, but I don't think I had much of the ice cream. I was stuffed and wanted to enjoy every last bit of the wontons.
DS chose chocolate pudding as his dessert. He was thrilled that it came with marshmallows on top. He had already eaten a few when I took this picture.
The boy has become quite the food critic; after hearing us describe food all week he declared the marshmallows to be "cooked really nicely...light and fluffy, just the way I like it." +1 for you, Yak & Yeti.
In conclusion, we enjoyed this meal a great deal. It was surely some of the best food we enjoyed on the whole trip. The atmosphere was nice (we specifically got seated in a quiet room for the sake of the baby) and the service, aside from the beginning glitch, was excellent. I Y&Y was also the highest priced non-buffet meal we had. We would certainly return again sometime, but this would probably be on of the places I would opt for when on the DDP instead of off. Or perhaps, we would order water (or DH could get his limeade thing) and share a dessert to keep the cost down. I would also consider coming here just for the green beans and dessert!
