Okay, I'm still trying to put two and two together here and have a question on standby. Now my understanding is that a family can get in a standby line to ride a ride and not get separated, correct? If this is correct, I also understand that there are certain rides this strategy is better for, correct?
We're a family of 4, can someone list or point me to the list of rides where riding standby is preferred?

Standby is just the regular line. So you're going to always be in the standby line unless:
1 - you have FPs you are using, then you are in the FP line (this is really the "opposite" of the standby line).
2 - for a few attractions, there are single rider lines - Test Track, Rock n Roller Coaster - what's the other one I can't think - there's only 3 at all the parks. That can be quicker, but you will ride wherever they can fit you, and not with your family - so you might be the 4th person in a ride vehicle that already had a party of 3 in it.
You will never be separated from your family in the standby line unless you need more than one ride vehicle to fit everyone.

As far as what is preferred for riding standby - there will be a sign out in front of the ride entrance stating "Wait time for this ride is ___ Minutes" If that says less than 15 minutes, usually we'll ride. If it's 20 or more we typically don't. If it's more than a half hour, no way!!
This also changes a bit throughout the day - the first 2 hours you are in the park are really the "magic hours" because the crowds are low and the lines are short - spending 15 minutes in a line during that time can really mess up the rest of your day's plan because it takes up so much of that "Magic 2 hours".
Many rides do not have a Fastpass option - for these there is only Standby. Read the touring plans sections here http://www.easywdw.com/category/plans/ for a great overview of when to ride.
There are also anytime rides... rides that you can fit in anywhere as the wait times are usually very reasonable.
