    Sticky/FAQ solicitation

As you know I am currently at a medical conference in San Diego. I promise I haven't forgotten about you guys. I would like to solicit your help. I would appreciate any ideas you may have that are worth stickies or faqs.

I am definitely going spend some time on resale vs. Disney agent. In addition I plan on writing an in depth article about whether DVC is right for you. I plan to put in financial analysis and graphs with break-even points etc.

I will also include a sticky with important links.

I am considering a step by step guide on how to rent points at a DVC resort.

Again any help is appreciated. I hope in time that this website can become the best place to get all of your unfiltered, distilled down DVC information in one spot.

I really like dvcnews.com for a good basic primer on DVC, unless Josh doesn't want to link to them for any reason (I really haven't read all of Josh's material, so I don't know what he has on DVC). But they have a very good FAQ on the basics and keep up to date on the current offers and prices.

I think we should continue the rule they have on the DIS of not being permitted to post the 800# for Member Services. On the DIS, there is actually a filter that prevents that number from being posted; we might consider the same.

You need some info on occupancy limits at each DVC resort - that gets asked a lot ("can I REALLY only have xx # of people in my room at XYZ?"). And that answer is not the same for someone staying on points as someone who books through Disney for cash, in all cases.

I hope this is relevant to your post. Since I am brand new to Disney planning, I have a million things I am wondering about and am hoping to glean info from this forum just from sheer exposure! But as a newbie I often wonder what all the akronyms mean?? Is there a list somewhere? That might be a good FAQ.

Also, I'd love to see some info about staying on-site vs. off-site. Maybe you could include benefits/drawbacks for each and basic cost analysis?

Excellent thought on the acronyms list, I don't think we have one here yet. I will post that on the moderators board and we'll have to see about coming up with one.

As to the off-site/on-site thing, that would most likely fit better on the Resorts board (where I am the mod). I'm soliciting FAQ ideas over there too, so I will have to give that some thought. Benefits/drawbacks would be fairly easy; cost analysis almost impossible. But it's a good idea to address - so thanks!

I've always wondered why they do that. Is it just to keep the phone number out of non-member's hands? It's pretty easy to find in a Google search.

And it's not like they are going to get anywhere calling that 800# if they are not a member. I'm not sure what the big deal is about hiding it. I must be missing something.

I believe it is because our dues pay for that 800# and if enough people were calling it all the time, it would eventually show up in costs passed on to the owners (when you have a toll-free number, you pay based on # of calls in, unless the phone companies have changed that model). I'm guessing we probably couldn't imagine how many non-members would try to call that 800# for something if it were published on the DIS (even if it is findable in some other places). It's not that different than when the TA 800#s used to be posted there all the time and Disney kept having to change the phone numbers all the time.

Makes sense. But the number is readily available in other places. I'm not sure how much of a difference it does or doesn't make. I don't think there's a way of knowing one way or the other. Kinda like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.

I just thought of something for the FAQ. How about a section on segmented reservations that allow you to have DDP on only part of reservation or changing the DDP type/number by using segmented reservations.

I don't know anything about Disney Vacation Club, unfortunately. With your permission, I may post whatever you write here on the "main site" also.

Not sure about the 800 number for member services. I think making a big deal out of it might just call more attention to the number in the first place. It doesn't seem like something people would just randomly bring up in conversation.

I truly don't get the worry about it and I see no reason anyone would ever post it anyway. If you are a member you have it on your member card and even if somebody who wasn't called it, once they get to a person a member number is the first thing they have to give. I just don't see a mass of people calling it even if it did get posted here.

And once you've called it a couple of times you'll never forget it. I don't think I've ever seen as easier phone number to remember.

Can't wait to see the cost analysis. I would love to have the bargaining power of owning points to get my hubby to go at LEAST every year!

Looking forward to your "cost analysis" and then part 2 . . . "is adding on right for your family?"
