So we have decided that a week in the off season at Hilton Head will be our vacation to round out the year. I know I saw a thread before about people loving HH but there weren't a lot of details about activities and such. If you've been to Hilton Head what was there to do? What did you enjoy and not enjoy? This is one of the resorts with the littlest information. Please fill me in! We will be in a 2 bd villa.

We always rent something in Sea Pines, it's more secluded and less commercial than the rest of the island. We go to the beach, we hang out at the pool. We do a little shopping/wandering in Coligny Plaza and Harbour Town. We see Gregg Russell play in the evening at Harbour Town. The girls like the Harbour Town playground. We took the girls on the pirate cruise the last time (2009). We eat at Crazy Crab. DH and I eat at Charlie's L'Etoile Verte (MIL has gone with us both times since we've had little girls, but those days are probably done, they'll go with us to eat the next time, whenever that is, maybe 2014). We swim in the pool. A lot of people ride bikes, there are great trails, but our girls were previously too little. They will probably be big enough next time. Sometimes we go to the South Beach area (where Salty Dog is), but we weren't too thrilled with our experience at Land's End Tavern the last time (went for the advertized all-you-can-eat crab legs ... which was false advertizing). We don't go, but there are outlet malls. We'll probably do mini golf the next time, the girls again are big enough now.

The Disney property on HH doesn't appeal to us at all.

ETA: The Disney property isn't on the beach. It costs waaaaaaaaaay more than most places of equivilent size and amenities that are right on the beach. We haven't coughed up the bucks to stay on the beach yet, but would head there rather than the Disney resort. Of course, we aren't DVC owners either.

We love it there. I assume you'll be staying at the Disney resort. We only go off season-I've heard so many horror stories about crowds on the island in season. We love the nature-the marsh, the birds, the trees. Oh-and the gelato down the street at Pino Gelato-actually all the places we eat on the island. Depending on which villa you're in, you may be able to see dolphins swimming in the inlet. Don't miss some of the many activities the resort offers, especially don't miss visiting with their resident mascot, Shadow. Feel free to PM me with any more questions-I love to talk Hilton Head. We've stayed there 10 times, with our 11th trip scheduled for Thanksgiving, so we may have some tips.

Thanks Simasmom! Yes we are going in the off season to the disney resort. I'm glad to hear that some of the activities are still available. We had a bad experience last year in the off season at OBX where everything was closed. The kids were bored. Sooo that was a HUGE concern. We will be a 2bdrm, is there a better area to request at check in to get a chance to see the dolphins. I thought the rates were actually pretty good, but again its off season! They are fairly comparable to myrtle beach and I wanted something a bit more relaxing... and still get my disney fix! Thanks! I'll be pming you as it gets a bit closer!

I know that they saw dolphins from the last building, 31 I think it is. And we've seen dolphins from the main lodge. This summer a manatee was seen resting over by the marina where all the boats are by Shelter Cove. I thought that was cool, but I imagine manatees could only be seen in the summertime, not off season. As far as things being closed down, the only time anything at all was closed as I remember, was on one trip in February. Then there were maybe 3 or 4 of the hundred or so resturants that were closed.

We also love HHI. We will be there over Labor Day weekend for our 4th visit. We have also been in October and May, never in summer. I don't have a problem with it not being on the beach, I love the marsh and the fishing lodge vibe. At the resort itself there are activities every day. Usually a Pirate Pool Party one evening, campfires complete with s'mores a few nights, story-telling from the local historian, fishing, bike rentals, various crafts and nature walks, etc. I've heard that they will e-mail you the latest activity guide if you call and ask, I will do that right before our trip. Some activities off-resort may be curtailed off-season and there may not be as much going on at the beach house but I'm sure you will still find plenty to do. I think our favorite view so far was from building 15. The change in the marsh from high to low tide was incredible! For dolphin spotting, I think buildings 27, 29, or 31 would be best. It is such a relaxing place! I can't wait for our next visit, I'll be there in four weeks!!!
