View Full Version : Making Oatmeal in the Room-- and --- WeGoShop

Strange title, I know.
We are staying at POFQ in June, and our plan was to eat breakfast in our room. DS9 is super picky and usually only eats 'hot' breakfast items. We didn't even think about there not being a microwave until tonight. ACK! :RpS_w00t:
Are you able to request a microwave? (I am doubtful; I've seen nothing about being able to request it at Moderates.) If not, are we able to get hot water from the food court and take it to our room to make oatmeal? And is this even a feasible option to plan, not knowing how far our room will be from the food court?
Also, is the refrigerator big enough for 2 half-gallons of milk (and a bottle of wine, and a couple of beers? You know, let's not forget about the important stuff!)
This leads me to my other question: has anyone used wegoshop recently? I've only seen a few reviews on other sites, and all have had positive reviews. From what I've read, they look cheaper than Garden Grocer.
Thanks in advance!
Can you run hot water through the coffee maker?

No microwaves are available for "rent" from the resorts, but they do have microwaves in each food court, and you're welcome to use them to heat your own food.
Putting water through the coffee maker makes it taste weird, and usually doesn't get it as hot as one would like for oatmeal.
Here's what we bring: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006IUXU/ref=wms_ohs_product
It doesn't take up as much space as you'd think, it's short enough that it will fit in any regular sized suitcase with room for padding top/bottom, and you can stuff things inside it so the only additional space it's actually taking up is the base area with the heating element.
Another option is an immersion heater. I used to have one of these, but it never really boiled the water and they are notorious for not lasting very long: http://www.amazon.com/NORPRO-559-Immersion-Warming-Liquids/dp/B000I8VE68/ref=sr_1_39?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1336188848&sr=1-39
The refrigerator will hold two half gallons. The bottle of wine might be tough unless you remove the one shelf, I don't know if it would lay on its side (depends on how tall the bottle is). Beers will fit laying down or upright with the shelf removed.

When we stayed at ASMu, our youngest was just over 1 year. He liked oatmeal for breakfast, and really nothing else. We went to the food court every day, and I bought the rest of us breakfast while DH made him oatmeal. We brought paper bowls and instant oatmeal packets with us in the suitcase, and it worked out fine.

If you're going to run the water through the coffee maker, I'd put an empty filter in there. I don't know if it really helps but it's what I've done in the past.
I don't recall a microwave in the POFQ food court. If it's there, I didn't notice because I didn't need to use it. There is a hot water dispenser next to the coffee in the beverage bar so it would be easy enough for you to get some hot water there.
If you think you're going to run to the food court every morning, you may want to request a first floor room in buildings 2, 3, 4, or 5. We were in a first floor in building 5 in the part of it closest to the food court. It was so easy to pop over there. Even if you're in building 1 or 7 you're probably only 5 minutes from the food court.
portorleans.org has some good, unofficial info if you haven't visited the site yet.

Oh, and I totally forgot you asked about WeGoShop - they are great! We've used them the past few trips and they have been just perfect, always get exactly what is on our list, and pass on savings if there's coupons or 2-for-1 deals.

Forget using the coffeemaker for oatmeal water. Even with the glass coffee pot the flavor of coffee never leaves for some reason.

I'd probably either pack a small kettle or else just get hot water from the food court from the dispenser beside the coffee maker. That's what I use for making my kids' hot cocoa (they're allergic to the stuff they sell there so I bring my own instant). I know they won't drink it if it has even the slightest coffee taste to it and you just can't get that completely out of the coffee maker. We head to the food court anyway to get the swill they call coffee (I drink it regardless of how it tastes) so filling up a cup with hot water is no big deal.
I use Garde Grocer so I can't comment on wegoshop. I chooose GG over WGS even though WGS does look like it would be cheaper just because I prefer their order process. Brands are VERY important to me (it's more than a preference thing; it's an allergy thing) and I need to know exactly what brands they'll have available (I don't know the grocery stores down there and don't know if they'll have what I need). I also really likely knowing my total when I'm placing my order. For me, this is worth the higher price. For people who aren't particular about brands or who are fine with estimating their costs until the order is complete then I think that based on reviews, WGS is likely the better option.

We bring the hot pot as well. It heats up the water to boiling really quickly.

Thanks, I just ordered the hot pot!
How big is the fridge? Standard dorm size?
Appreciate everone's help!
Yes, the fridge is a large dorm size. We stored leftovers, milk, and fruit in our with zero problems. Personally I'd just go the the food court and get hot water there. You can get a side of sausage for a snack credit, too. Everything is so close at fq. Depending on what building you get, you may need to walk through there to get to the busses anyway.

Actually, the whole specific brand thing is why I chose wegoshop. For some reason GC seemed more complicated to me. DS is a little less picky now, but when we first ordered I had specific brands, flavors & the stores where they could be purchased. We are on our third trip ordering from them. Perfect every time!
I hear good things about GC also.....if only one of them actually did this where I live!! I would so pay for this :RpS_drool:
