March 2016 Disney World Operating Schedule Changes

Disney made another round of changes to the March 2016 operating schedule today. The full operating schedule is available here: http://media.disneywebcontent.com/StaticFiles/ParkHours/WDWTravelAgent_march.pdf. Click “refresh” on your browser to load the newest version.

The additions and extensions are surprisingly light considering we’re talking about peak season pricing at the resorts for spring break from March 4th to the 19th and then Easter season begins on March 20th, with some of the highest resort prices and heaviest crowds of the entire year from March 20th to April 2nd. We don’t see any days where Disney has added a second Electrical Parade and they have also neglected to add a second Fantasmic on any date up until March 20th. That’s a major departure from what we’ve seen in past years.

In 2015, Main Street Electrical Parade was scheduled 62 times in March. This year, it’s scheduled 31 times. In 2015, Fantasmic was scheduled 62 times. This year, it’s scheduled 43 times. In 2015, we saw 32 regular 8am opens. In 2016, we see zero. In 2015, Magic Kingdom hosted morning Extra Magic hour on 13 straight days starting a week before Easter and continuing for a week after. This year, we have just the two total that would be scheduled any other week during the year.

That’s in addition to a flurry of entertainment and staffing cuts that have already begun.

Of course, they could still add additional parades and Fantasmic shows and extend the hours further.

On the plus side, we do have Star Wars Fireworks added nightly and Flower and Garden starts March 2nd.

“That’s in addition to a flurry of entertainment and staffing cuts that have already begun.”

Why is Disney cutting staff and entertainment?

        • Sandy says

Dang, maybe we should tell Disney about all those thousands of dollars being thrown on the ground by guests that need to leave early! That would take care of staffing and entertainment! LOL

    • Kurt says

The reason is Shanghai Disney is way over budget. The other parks have been asked to help out and cut non-profit activities (e.g. fireworks, character-meet-and-greets, EMH). Disneyland cut back 20% in Feb and WDW is expected to do the same in March…as we can see. And remember Disney Parks is it’s own profit center so it doesn’t matter Disney overall just posted it’s best earnings.

      • Sandy says

I don’t think people who are spending their money to stay on Disney property should have to give up extra EMHs and early openings during one of the busiest times of the year just so they can make Shanghai Disney more spectacular. I have read on several different sites that people are really upset about the schedule so far. I sure hope they add more early openings at the very least for the last 2 weeks of March.

  2. Stephen says

So, you’re seeing an unusual scheduling pattern when it comes to March? Would that be due to low ticket sales?

Is it typical for Disney to have the schedule hashed out this close to the next month? Or are they known for dropping scheduling bombs at the last minute?

  3. Mark Adams says

Hey, what happened to the daily wait time analysis post? I really enjoyed it even though I might not have commented, and I’m sure others did too!

  4. Jeanie says

Would you expect Disney to change the March hours again? Wondering if they’ll add EMH or extend hours at MK for the weeks of March 20 and March 27?

  5. Sandy says

I sure hope they change the hours to 8am openings the week of Easter at Magic Kingdom and add EMHs. Otherwise, it is really going to make it tough to get some good non crowded touring time.

  6. Lynn42 says

We went in 2012 and 2014 during spring break and the EMH at MK opening at 7am is what we love about going then. We are going at the end of March this year and hoping they add those hours even if last minute!
