WS Counter Service

La Cantina de San Angel

Food Type: Mexican

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrées are $10-$12; Deserts are $4; Margaritas cost $9 each

Unique Items: Most everything

How La Cantina Seating Works: From 11am to around 3pm, guests may take their food from La Cantina de San Angel and eat it in the air-conditioned La Hacienda de San Angel restaurant that sits adjacent to La Cantina de San Angel.  Those eating at La Cantina may also choose to eat in the covered, outdoor seating section next to the restaurant.  After about 3:30pm, La Cantina guests must either sit in the La Cantina seating section or find somewhere else to sit because La Hacienda de San Angel begins seating guests for table service dinner at 4pm.  La Hacienda de San Angel has a capacity of about 250 people and the dedicated La Cantina seating area has a capacity of about 150 people.

Name Confusion: There are three San Angel restaurants, all of which are operated by the same company.  San Angel Inn is the table service restaurant inside of the pyramid.  La Hacienda de San Angel is the table service restaurant that overlooks the World Showcase Lagoon.  La Cantina de San Angel is the counter service location outside on the World Showcase promenade.

Advantages: Food is colorful, fresh, and presented better than most counter service meals.  The dedicated seating area is the most pleasant in Epcot, covered and overlooking the World Showcase Lagoon.  Illuminations can be seen from most tables (disclaimer in disadvantages below).  The quality of the ingredients is higher than before Cantina was refurbished.  Prices are in line with other Epcot counter service options.  Chips and salsa are filling and a nice side dish.  Churros are delicious and count as a snack credit or dessert on the Disney Dining Plan.

Disadvantages: La Cantina’s most glaring disadvantage is its lack of seating after 4pm and specifically after 8pm.  Illuminations viewing spots are in high demand and La Cantina’s seating area sits right on the World Showcase Lagoon, offering a prime view of the show.  You’ll see a lot of people sitting at La Cantina without food from 8pm until Illuminations begins at 9pm, either sipping slowly on a margarita or simply sitting with nothing at all.  This can be aggravating to those who simply want to enjoy a late meal or those who wanted to eat a meal while watching Illuminations, but arrived after all the seats were taken.  Disney does not police the area well, probably because they don’t want to make a scene telling customers who paid for Park admission to scram from a public place inside the Park.  If you see a table with empty chairs, you might ask to join whoever is sitting there.  It’s possible that a Disney employee will ask a group who isn’t eating to leave a table, but it is usually an uncomfortable experience.  If there are no empty tables and you would like to sit, I would recommend taking your food up to the Norway Pavilion, which is just a short walk away.  The seating area behind Kringla Bakeri og Café offers plentiful covered seating and it is accessible from outside, so you don’t even have to enter the counter service to get to the tables.

Portions are large enough to satisfy one, but it’s unlikely one entrée will serve two.  The menu is somewhat limited with just four entrées – beef tacos, chicken tacos, nachos, and cheese empanadas.  At $10-$12 per entrée, La Cantina is not an inexpensive meal.  It takes longer to prepare and serve the food than most other counter service locations.  There are only two kids’ meal options – fried chicken nuggets or a fried cheese empanada.  A grilled cheese quesadilla or simple taco option would be a nice addition for those who prefer something that at least appears to be “healthy.”

Value: Above average.  La Cantina serves freshly prepared food with sensible portions in a pleasant setting.  While $12 is not a cheap meal, it’s only about $3 more than you would pay for a burger and fries or small portion of teriyaki elsewhere.  In other words, the slightly elevated cost is justified considering the quality of experience you are likely to receive.

Reputation:  La Cantina de San Angel reopened in September 2010 after a lengthy refurbishment that improved the seating area, food quality, and presentation.  If you’re in the mood for a quicker Mexican meal than you would find at San Angel Inn, La Hacienda de San Angel, or La Cava del Tequila, I have no hesitation in recommending La Cantina.  For a margarita, I would still recommend going inside the Mexico Pavilion to La Cava del Tequila, which serves a superior alcoholic drink to La Cantina.  They will also provide a takeout cup if you would like to enjoy your drink on the promenade and serve appetizer-style food at prices similar to La Cantina.  While you’ll find a more gourmet experience at La Cava, the food isn’t as filling as a meal at La Cantina.  For more information on alcohol at Epcot, see my “How to Drink Around the World at Epcot’s World Showcase” guide, which provides a review of the alcoholic beverage offerings at each of the World Showcase countries.

In closing, I have enjoyed La Cantina de San Angel and early reports indicate that others are enjoying it as well.  If that changes, I will update this review.

Food Type: Le France

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Most items under $5

Unique Items: Just about everything.  Your chances of finding a Napoleon this good at Animal Kingdom are nonexistent.

Value: Above Average to Excellent.  Maximize a Dining Plan snack credit with a $3.95 treat.

Reputation: If there’s one thing the French do well, it’s pastries.  The Boulangerie has chocolate éclairs, raspberry schuss, cream puffs, and about 20 more items for under $4.  Just about every single one is freshly made and delicious.  I recommend the chocolate croissant in particular, but I don’t think you could go wrong here.

Food Type: Norweigan

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Between $2 for a pastry to $10 for a sandwich

Unique Items: Just about everything.

Advantages: The sandwiches are large, unique, and quite possibly big enough for two.  The seating area is ample, covered (though outside), and one of the best spots at Epcot to take a rest.  The school bread, apple and ham sandwich, and just about everything else are freshly prepared and delicious.  Pastries in particular are an outstanding value.

Disadvantages: Line may be long and slow moving, especially at lunch time when people are more likely to order a hot sandwich.

Value: Excellent.  School bread and lefse are both great desserts or snacks and will set you back less than $3 or a measly snack credit.

Reputation: Kringla is a favorite of anyone “in the know.”  Still, it is not particularly popular due to the perceived “exoticness” of Norway and its food.  Don’t be frightened though.  Kringla is one of the best kept secrets at Disney.  If you do anything for me during your entire trip, get a school bread.

Wondering how Liberty Inn stacks up against the other Epcot Counter Service Locations? Check out The Best Epcot Quick Counter Service Locations for a comparison of the nine Epcot counter services in a variety of categories including Most Unique Menu, Best Value on the Disney Dining Plan, Best Value Out of Pocket, Best Seating, Best Food, and Best Overall Counter Service.

Food Type: American

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrees between $7-$9

Unique Items: Hot Roast Beef and Cheddar Sandwich and Baked Apple Dumpling.  Otherwise, the Liberty Inn is a standard Disney counter service with burgers, chicken nuggets, a salad, and not much else.

Advantages: Frozen Cokes for a snack credit.  It’s air conditioned.  Picky eaters will be happy with their hamburger and chicken nuggets.  The Hot Roast Beef and Cheddar sandwich is a little different and the baked apple dumpling is better than most counter service desserts.

Disadvantages: Booooooorrrrrrriiiiiinnnnggggggggg.  The menu is limited to standard Disney fare and the food isn’t prepared as well as Pecos Bill or Cosmic Ray’s.  There are more interesting dining options in every direction.

Value: Poor.   More than $10 for a fast food burger, fries, and drink isn’t a good deal anywhere other than the moon.

Reputation: Liberty Inn is decent.  I’m not sure why you would choose it considering all of the other options available though.  The frozen coolers, or “Icees”, are a great treat to help cool off.  The baked apple dumpling is also worth checking out for dessert.

Food Type: Americanized Chinese

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrees between $7-$8

Unique Items: Unique to Disney perhaps, but if you’ve been to Panda Express or any other fast food Chinese restaurant then you’ve seen this kind of thing before.

Advantages: There’s a chance you might get the Panda Express itch during your Disney vacation and this is the closest you’ll get to quenching that thirst.  The Chinese gardens are pretty and right next to the seating area, making this one of the more pleasant places to sit at Epcot.  Service is usually fast.  Peach Oolong Tea is refreshing.

Disadvantages: It’s like Panda Express, only more expensive, not as good, and portions are smaller.  The only dessert options, red bean or caramel ginger ice cream, are a bit unusual and may not be appealing.

Value: Poor to average.  Three potstickers for $5 is not a particularly good deal if you ask me.  Portion sizes are small for the $8 price tag, but it should leave room for a delicious school bread from Kringla later in the day.

Reputation: Lotus Blossom is not a particularly well regarded counter service.  You could do worse, certainly, but it shouldn’t be at the top of your list.  The quality of the food isn’t anything to write home about and the portions are small for the price. I would stick with the entrées and skip the overpriced appetizers if you do choose to dine here.

Wondering how Sommerfest stacks up against the other Epcot Counter Service Locations? Check out The Best Epcot Quick Counter Service Locations for a comparison of the nine Epcot counter services in a variety of categories including Most Unique Menu, Best Value on the Disney Dining Plan, Best Value Out of Pocket, Best Seating, Best Food, and Best Overall Counter Service.

Food Type: German

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrees about $7

Unique Items: Bratwurst or Frankfurter served with sauerkraut on a bun.  The salted pretzel is also excellent and a little different than other Disney pretzels.

Advantages: If you like bratwurst and frankfurter served with sauerkraut on a bun then you will like this place.  Service is fast and lines are rarely long.  Desserts, pretzels, and beer are better than average.

Disadvantages: Sommerfest only offers two entrées and there is extremely limited seating.

Value: Above average.  The pretzel can be had for around $3 and is one of the best on property.  Although $6 for a bratwurst may seem expensive, it’s cheaper than most other counter service entrées and the quality is high.

Reputation: Sommerfest is not particularly popular because of its limited menu.  The brats really are good though and if you’re in the mood for some sauerkraut then this is it.  The pretzels also make a great snack even if brats don’t interest you.

Wondering how Tangierine Cafe stacks up against the other Epcot Counter Service Locations? Check out The Best Epcot Quick Counter Service Locations for a comparison of the nine Epcot counter services in a variety of categories including Most Unique Menu, Best Value on the Disney Dining Plan, Best Value Out of Pocket, Best Seating, Best Food, and Best Overall Counter Service.

Food Type: Moroccan

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrees $10-$14

Unique Items: Everything

Advantages: Entrée platters are in the $14 range which makes this a great value on the Dining Plan.  Seating area is interesting.  Tangierine Café serves some of the best vegetarian entrées at Disney World.  The food is healthier than any of the fried options and portions are large.  Although the food is a bit “different” it should appeal to most people’s tastes.

Disadvantages: Tangierine Café is one of the more expensive counter service options at Disney.  The meatball platter is not recommended.

Value: Above average to excellent.  On the Dining Plan this is a must.  Off the dining plan, try sharing the chicken and lamb Shawarma Platter.  It should satisfy two and there is enough food to be found around Epcot that you’ll be happy you aren’t stuffed.

Reputation: Tangierine Café is a favorite among many and it is rare to hear bad things about it.  The menu may seem a bit “out there” for some, but trust me, your palette is refined enough to enjoy this.  Tangierine also boasts healthier, fresher tasting options than many of the other Disney restaurants.  I would recommend Tangierine Café to anyone looking for something a little adventurous, while still appealing to the masses.

Wondering how Yakitori House stacks up against the other Epcot Counter Service Locations? Check out The Best Epcot Quick Counter Service Locations for a comparison of the nine Epcot counter services in a variety of categories including Most Unique Menu, Best Value on the Disney Dining Plan, Best Value Out of Pocket, Best Seating, Best Food, and Best Overall Counter Service.

Food Type: Japanese

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Entrees $8-9

Unique Items: Most of it, at least as far as counter service is concerned.

Advantages: Air-conditioned inside and outdoor seating is in a pleasant garden atmosphere.  Sushi is relatively inexpensive.

Disadvantages: Food is inconsistent, bland, and portions are on the small side.  I would not recommend the beef in particular due to its low quality.  Sushi is mass produced and served in cheap plastic containers.  Seating areas both inside and outside are small.

Value: Below average to average.

Reputation: Yakitori House is a disappointment for me because I love teriyaki.  Although it’s far from terrible, I just can’t recommend it because of the low quality ingredients, small portion size, and limited seating areas.  Luckily, both of the Japan Pavilion’s sit-down restaurants are excellent.  If you’re in the mood for sushi or teriyaki, I would suggest either of them.  The Mitsukoshi Department Store in Japan is also a fabulous place to find little Japanese snacks and treats.

Wondering how Yorkshire County Fish Shop stacks up against the other Epcot Counter Service Locations? Check out The Best Epcot Quick Counter Service Locations for a comparison of the nine Epcot counter services in a variety of categories including Most Unique Menu, Best Value on the Disney Dining Plan, Best Value Out of Pocket, Best Seating, Best Food, and Best Overall Counter Service.

Food Type: Fish, fries, and beer

Dining Plan: One Quick Service or One Snack

Cost: Two-piece fish for $7.99

Unique Items: Best fried fish at Disney World

Advantages: Kids can order the adult size portion on the Dining Plan because there is no kids menu.  Food is served fresh and hot.

Disadvantages: There are only a few tables to sit down at, which means you’ll likely have to hunt down other accommodations.  Portions aren’t huge.  Yorkshire doesn’t serve fresh tartar sauce – only packets.

Value: Above average.  Portion size is probably the only downside.  Since fried fish is expensive outside of Disney, $8 doesn’t seem like an exorbitant price considering the quality of the food.

Reputation: Yorkshire County is a favorite of mine and a lot of others.  You’ll even hear compliments from the majority of those who are visiting from the United Kingdom, which is how you know it’s good.  The fact that there is extremely limited seating is probably the biggest gripe, but you should be able to find a bench, curb, or table nearby.  Lines can also get long, but the fact that there is really only one thing to order speeds things up considerably.  Portions are also on the smaller side, but that just means you’ll have more room to use those snack credits later on at France and Norway.
